Silhouette Sketch Pen Tutorial

Many of you have been asking for this tutorial for a long while now and I’m sorry it took me so long! But I hope you find it helpful now that it’s finally up. Sketch Pens are one of the coolest features of the Silhouette machines.
Using multiple colors on one page can be a bit intimidating the first time, but once you do it, you’ll wonder why you waited so long. There are so many ways you can use this basic tutorial.
Here’s what I used for this project:
- Silhouette CAMEO (or Portrait)
- Cutting Mat
- White Cardstock
- Sketch pens
- Free cut file (.studio3 or .studio)
Note: Alternatively, you can also use the sketch pen holder with other kinds of pens and markers too (I often use it with Sharpies!).
Step One: Open the design in Silhouette Studio and select the Cut Settings Window (second option from top right as shown below). In the options, set the selection to NO CUT in the Cut Style section, as in below screenshot.
Step Two: Select just the text/images you want to be in one given color and select CUT in the Cut Style Options. Make sure the Material Type is set to Silhouette Sketch Pen. Insert the sketch pen you want where you’d normally put the blade, and send to Silhouette.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT remove the mat. It has to stay in the machine until all colors are complete!
Step 3: Select everything and click NO CUT again. Then select what you want to be in color two and select CUT again. Change out your sketch pen and repeat steps 2 & 3 until your whole design is complete.
I used five different colors repeating steps 2 and 3 until my design was done. Now it’s ok to remove the paper and mat!
You can also re-size the cut file and use it as a stencil for a wood sign. Personal use only, please!
