Designer Crafts Connection Handmade Holiday Hop: Painted Holly Applique Accent Pillow

Today I'm taking part in a Designers Craft Connection blog hop sponsored by Fairfield World, makers of Oly*Fun material and Poly-fil® pillow inserts. The theme is Handmade Holiday which is perfect because I can get a little jump on my holiday crafting! If you've never worked with Oly*Fun material, it is is a lovely soft fabric made of 100% polypropolene. It doesn't fray when cut which is a big timesaver - no hemming needed!

This is actually a very simple project with a minimal amount of tools and materials required. The painting is done with paint pens and if you can scribble, you can make this pillow no problem!

Be sure to read to the end of the post and follow along on the hop for your chance to win a package of Nature-fil Fiberfil from Fairfield!

Here's how:

Painted Holly Applique Accent Pillow

Materials:

Instructions:

1. Cut two 12" circles from the black Oly*fun fabric. Cut a strip 2" wide by 38" long from the Snow White Oly*fun. If the fabric is wrinkled, use an iron set to "low" and a pressing cloth. (Be careful here because you don't want your iron to get too hot and melt the Oly*Fun.)

2. Draw a simple holly leaf on a piece of paper to make a pattern and use it to trace three leaves on two layers of Kiwi Oly*fun. Cut out to make six leaves. Draw three 2 1/2" circles on two layers of Cherry Pop Oly*fun. Cut out to make six circles.

3. Arrange three leaves and three red circles on one large black circle. Pin in place. Repeat for the second black circle and the remaining leaves and circles.

4. Zig-zag stitch around the edge of each shape.

5. Use the paint pens to add details to the fabric as shown. You'll notice that the background is just simple scribbling with the white paint pen. Easy!

6. Draw black stars and red and green dots on the white strip of fabric.

7. Put the two black fabric circles together back to back and pin together. Fold the white strip in half so that it is 1" wide. Pin it around the edge of the black circles 1/2" in from the outer edge. Straight stitch the strip in place 3/4" in from the outer edge of the strip leaving a 4" opening so that you can insert the pillow.

8. Insert the pillow into the opening in the side of the fabric. Pin the white strip over the opening and stitch closed.

That's it! Try making a bunch of these as gifts to have on hand for unexpected guests. Instead of holly leaves, you can cut out letters to personalize the pillows. Use your favorite colors and shapes to make these truly yours!
