Review: Guerlain Joli Teint Bronzing Powder

I resisted Guerlain Terracotta Joli Teint Bronzing Powder ($53) for a long time after it was released earlier this year. I have (and love) the Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Powder ($58)(reviewed here), and Guerlain’s offering fits into the same category. Both are designed to give one a lightly sheer wash of a soft, healthy bronze glow during the summer months. Essentially, this give your skin a French “bonne mine” beautiful appearance that brings your natural skin tone down a touch, as if you’ve spent your days sipping wine in an outdoor cafe, gathering shells on a beach, or other delightful outdoor activity. I was glad that I did pick up Guerlain’s Terracotta Joli Tient Bronzing Powder so that I can compare the two for you, as well as to enjoy. The shade range of Guerlain’s Joli Tient is quite narrow compared to Chanel’s Les Beiges seven-shade range. Guerlain offers only four color tones, and the variation from lightest to darkest is not nearly as dramatic as Chanel’s offering. I’ve chose Guerlain Shade 02 Natural Blondes on my MAC NC15/20- Chanel Ivoire/Cameo skin for a bonne mine effect. I’m very happy with that choice. Although not a skin tone match, the #02 shade gives me a nice natural looking wash of color that helps me to look healthy on my otherwise sunblock-protected skin. I want to emphasize that I’m using this powder is intended to be used as an all-over color wash. Although this can be used as a traditional bronzer, the effect would be quite subtle.

Perhaps the most dramatic difference compared to Chanel Les Beiges is that Guerlain’s Joli Teint powder includes a sliver of color that can be used to add some color to the upper cheek, or to be mixed with the bronzer-toned color.

The powder has a touch of shimmer, which shows up as a natural sheen on the skin. It’s Guerlain powder, as you would expect it’s absolutely gorgeous, natural and “my-skin-but-better.” Really, it’s a lovely lovely lovely powder.

As with many Guerlain products, the Joli Teint powder is strongly scented. I’ve now worn away the pattern on the surface, and the scent (while lovely) is still quite noticeable as I work with the product. The scent isn’t noticeable to me when applied, but some with sensitive skin should be aware.

I’m still working from my backpack, but thought it would be helpful to post some quick swatches (these are heavily applied). As you can see, the powder whispers “healthy glow” in a very believable way. When I apply this product to my face allover, I use a large fluffy brush.

Although my Guerlain will not replace my Chanel Les Beiges, I have to say that the slim compact and lovely glow has made this a very good choice. I am not certain why Guerlain, a company that has such a wide tonal range of the 4 Seasons bronzers, chose to create only four in this version. Nonetheless, if you can find a color that works for you, I highly recommend it. It’s a wonderful luxury product.
