The Vintage Fur Debate: Classy or Cruel?

In my family, we rarelybuy each other presents however we get a lot of hand me downs. A few times a year, my grandmother or mother would call me to their room and give me jewelry or amazing pieces of clothing: from jade, and diamond rings to fur. It is all about quality over quantity. One time, my grandmother gave me a beautiful cashmere cardigan with the most gorgeous lining, fur collar and pearl buttons. That was my first fur. From that moment, I knew I was in love with fur.

If you don’t believe in love at first sight, you don’t know where to find beautiful clothes. (Tweet this)

A fur coat can keep me warm in the cold Canadian winter . Fur can also add glamour to any outfit. I can wear simple t-shirt with dress pants and throw on my beautiful mink shawl and feel like a million dollars. During fall and winter, my seal skin cape is my favorite outerwear. It goes with anything, and when the -30 degrees Canadian winter comes, my warm fur coat is my best friend. I feel like a teddy bear in it. It doesn’t matter how cold it is, I won’t feel a thing. It makes a big difference if your body temperature doesn’t adjust very well like mine. My body temperature can easily to drop and it can be very dangerous. My fur always keeps me warm and dry.

A love story with fur is the Romeo and Juliet of the fashion industry. The fur debate has been unresolved for decades and neither side are truly listening to the other. It is one of the fashion pieces that can bring you a lot of trouble. If you don’t believe me, ask Kim Kardashian about her flour bomb experience. From my personal experience, I have lost a lot of followers for wearing fur. It bothers me when people are just blindly following a trend and judge others based on their limited of knowledge.

Is hating fur an animal discrimination?

Before I share my two cents, I want to make one point clear. I have a great respect for vegetarians who gave up meat, leather or all animal products, if they’re vegan. I admire people who go out of their way to support their belief even if i don’t agree with them. I have no problem with them judging me, because I can see the reason they do it. I love you for being the change you want to see in the world.

People are more violently opposed to fur than leather because it’s safer to harass rich women than motorcycle gangs. ~ Alexei Sayle (Tweet this)

However the majority of the people who judged me for wearing fur are not vegetarians. If you are telling me that it is cruel to wear fur while you are eating your big mac sitting on a leather chair, you will find that I have absolutely no respect for your opinion!

In a meat-eating world, wearing leather for shoes and clothes and even handbags, the discussion of fur is childish. ~ Karl Lagerfeld (Tweet this)

What is the difference between wearing fur and Ugg?

Not much, oh I forgot one has better taste than the other (you know I hate Ugg, and it stands for ugly). Your Ugg boots are made of sheepskin.

I cannot stand ignorant people who are following a trend because the media is talking about it without knowing the story. Judging other people for wearing fur doesn’t make you an animal lover.

There is no moral distinction between fur and other materials made from animals, such as leather, which also is the result of the suffering and death of sentient beings. ~ Gary L. Francione

I am not saying that killing an animal is a good thing. There is no difference between skinning a mink alive or cutting a chicken’s throat to make lunch. Both are not nice things to do. At the end of the day , they are both cruel because some animal will die.

Can we save all the animals? No, we need to survive too but we can try our best to control it.

Stop wasting time on judging people, and show some action. You are not in the position to judge me if you just sitting there enjoying your life and pointing fingers.

Is faux fur better than vintage fur?

There’s way too much controversy around new fur and I don’t want to deal with all that, it’s a headache. All my fur clothes are vintage. If I see a beautiful coat like guilty secret in the back of the closet, I will wear it. The animal has already died. I don’t see a reason to disgrace it by letting it collect dust somewhere. What happened has already happened, we need to make best out of it.

Many people think that it is cruel to even wear vintage fur and we should replace them with faux fur. But if they really did care about the cause, they shouldn’t even think about wearing faux fur. Thinking about it is no better than wearing it. You are carrying it around with you everywhere.

Faux fur is not better than vintage fur. It has a lot of problems. According to the British Fur Trade Association, it takes one gallon of oil to make three fake fur coats and fake fur is responsible for 40 percent of our toxic nitrous oxide emissions. There’s also so many human rights issues and safe working environment issues with producing faux fur.

So it is not okay to kill animal but it is okay for underage people to work long hours in unhealthy environment???

Both fur and faux fur have many ethical issues. I can’t say which is the better to choice. We need to learn to control our consumption and try to find the balance in life.

So is wearing fur cruel or classy?

There is always some controversial debate about everything I wear.

To be honest I don’t have an answer.

Like almost everything in life, it is not black or white. Humans are a disease to the earth, we are killing the planet in many ways. I am not a saint. I make mistakes and my knowledge is limited. It is so hard to try to be perfect in everything without hurting others. Who knows plants could have feelings too, should I starve myself ? I only try my best to keep the balance between the good and the bad. There’s always good in the bad and bad in the good.

At the end of the day, I prefer to wear vintage fur over faux fur because it fits my lifestyle better. I am not a fan of wearing synthetic materials. I will continue to wear my beautiful timeless fur because it keeps me warm in the winter. One day, I will give all my fur to my daughters just like my grandmother did. I try my best to respect your decision and hope you will too.
