The Attorney (2013) (English)

An attorney who specializes in tax laws, decides to defend a group of students who are accused of being communists in South Korea.

The Attorney is a type of film that probably is not for everyone if you have no knowledge of South Korea’s turbulent history. It’s not that yours truly is a history professor, but I have seen so many South Korean films, and I have learned a little about the history of this country, especially the country’s political history.

I’ve seen some of these films that take up the topic when South Korea was ruled by military laws. Students were accused of fronting communism, and in The Attorney we follow an attorney who takes up the fight against corruption and the torture that the students were exposed to. They were tortured so they would admit that they were communists.

In the lead role we find the Kang-ho Song. I’ve almost seen all of the films he has appeared in, he is of course one of my favorite actors. I would argue that he delivers in his best performance so far in his career with this role, that’s saying quite a lot considering the fact that he is always known to deliver the goods. But in The Attorney he plays on his entire registry, and we are also witness to a wonderful scene during the trial in which he ends up in a dramatic duel with the antagonist in the film. Imagine Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men, it’s really intense and you feel the wild inner energy of the protagonist. What a great scene!

The Attorney is a solid film that manages to evoke many emotions such as anger, frustration and hatred. No one likes to be trampled on, and The Attorney plays on the right strings so that one as a viewer is engaged and pissed off!
