Snowpiercer (2013) (English)

The ice age has come back after the human race tried to cure global warming. The sole survivors are on a train that goes around and around without stopping. There has arisen a class distinction, the weakest are located at the back of the railway wagon, while the more affluent are enjoying themselves in the railway wagons nearest the engine compartment. But now the weakest has had enough, and they have a plan that they hope will succeed. Now they will be kings, but the price will be big.

The film director Joon-ho Bong was the third director from South Korea in 2013 who chose to cooperate with the film industry in the West. In Snowpiercer there are two South Korean actors, the rest are white and familiar faces. South Korea is naturally represented by Kang-ho Song, the man everyone loves. Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell and John Hurt represents the West.

I was a little disappointed by Joon-ho Bong previous film, Mother. I think I must see that film again, the film was the good, it was just that I expected a different kind of film. Mother came out in 2009, so it was really time for a new film again!

Snowpiercer absolutely fell more in flavor than Mother. I was surprised by all the humor you find here, and as usual we’ll see some amazing visual scenes that almost only South Koreans can create. I am thinking especially of the wonderful scene early in the film with the ax gang, but Snowpiercer has more to offer visually, trust me!

Even with all of the humor, there is also more serious parts in Snowpiercer. Especially the last half hour might be a bit slow considering how fast the first hour went away. It is absolute quality when things are to be clarified and resolved, however the playfulness is gone and the seriousness takes over in the last act.
Snowpiercer dives into the mind of the characters, and tells us the choices you have if you had been in the same situation that the characters in the film are. Some do everything to survive, others give up. So we as viewers can judge these characters and choose sides.

The actors are wonderful. The actress who steals the show is actually Tilda Swinton. She delivers a fun interpretation in this role as a clone of Margaret Thatcher. I did not think she had it in her. She is so funny, especially when she punishes a shoe thrower.

Snowpiercer is what I call a real good entertainment film with some brilliant scenes. There is something special about the top three South Korean directors who manage to create a film magic I almost do not experience anymore. Snowpiercer is to me almost a masterpiece, but the third act did not fully convince, although the end is nice and convenient.

9/10
