Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon (2013) (English)

A sea monster is on the loose and makes trouble, and a young Dee must solve the case.

Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon is the sequel to Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame where we found Andy Lau in the lead role. This is the prequel to the first film, and Andy Lau has been replaced by a younger actor who does his job quite well.

I was not a big fan of the first film, I found the film boring. The CGI is not so much to brag about when watching Chinese blockbusters like this. But I actually liked the sequel, I found this was much more entertaining and fast paced than the first film.

The characters are one-dimensional, but you like them. It is very important, otherwise this becomes a tiresome journey if you can not find some charm with the characters we follow. I liked the simple rivalry between Dee and the city guards.

The action sequences are actually very good and in some cases creative. Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon is a film that never gets boring, there is something going on all the time and the dessert is a huge sea monster that actually look pretty good towards the end of the film. But let’s forget the terrible opening sequence with the bad CGI.

This was a positive surprise, I expected very little of this sequel. In fact, I expected to be disappointed like I was after watching the first film. But it turned out that Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon is a great film for the whole family that never gets too dark.
