Want The Perfect 70s Waves? We Show You How To Do It Yourself

Whether seen on the runway at the Diane Von Furstenberg show at New York Fashion Week, or on actress and hair inspiration Blake Lively, big gorgeous waves are the look of the season. Models Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid stood out at the Furstenberg show with soft, sexy waves swept to one side complete with bright blue eye makeup completing the retro vibe. Hollywood 70s waves look instantly gorgeous and glam, and here at CGD we show you how to copy the look in a few simple steps.

1. Pick the right shampoo and conditioner

We can often forget to properly prep our hair before styling but this is one of the most important steps. Before starting to create your 70s look, you need to use a shampoo and conditioner that suits your hair type in order to get the best results.

If you have naturally fine hair, then you need to pick a shampoo and conditioner that add volume and lift during the shampooing stage, like this Pure Abundance Volumising Shampoo from Aveda. This plant-based formula helps hair feel fuller and thicker with certified organic ingredients such as, acacia gum, organic peppermint, palmarosa and ylang ylang. Follow this with the Pure Abundance Volumising Clay Conditioner to complete the look, as the blend of kaolin clay and acacia gum helps to lift and fill out hair.

For those with thick, frizzy or curly hair, use a shampoo that softens and smooths hair like this Bumble and Bumble Straight Shampoo. The sulfate-free cleanser smooths hair, reducing frizz and making it more manageable before you’ve even got out the shower. Follow with the Straight Conditioner to manage unruly hair, leaving it with a silky shine.

Finally for coloured hair, you need to choose a shampoo and conditioner that will restore your hair’s natural oils which can be stripped away with regular dying. John Frieda’s Colour Care collection is renowned for working perfectly on your hair whether you’re a blonde, brunette or redhead. The Sheer Blonde shampoo and conditioner work to restore blonde tones whilst repairing and improving hair texture. Whilst the Liquid Shine Illuminating Shampoo has a shine-infusing complex leaving brunettes with high-gloss, long-lasting colour. Finally, the Radiant Red Magnifying Shampoo preserves colour, and magnifies shine with the help of anti-fading agents.

2. Prep your hair before styling

Before applying any heat to your hair, you need to make sure you use a heat protectant or styling spray that will enhance those 70s curls. Heat applied directly to the hair, without protectant, weakens vital proteins whilst stripping the hair of natural oil, which results in split ends and breakage.

Use Moroccan Oil Heat Styling Protection Spray as this vitamin-infused treatment provides styling protection whilst creating a thermal barrier that allows hair to withstand extreme heat. To achieve extra volume, use a strong hold mousse on the roots like this lightweight, foam-to-water mousse by Kerastase and blow dry hair upside down until your hair is completely dry.

3. Use a styling tool

For a truly 70s look, part the hair into a deep side parting before separating it into sections. Starting from the front, use a medium-sized curling iron to vertically curl 1 or 2-inch sections of hair away from the face. Keep the hair wrapped around the iron for 5-10 seconds depending on how thick the section of hair is. Once you’ve curled that section, spritz with a hairspray such as the GHD Curl Hold Spray, which will enhance and hold your curl in place. In terms of curling irons, then Cloud Nine’s Waving Wand is an award winning styling tool that is worthy of the price tag as the long, smooth barrel allows you to create stunning curls simply.

If your hair struggles to hold curls all day or is notorious for falling flat, then you can twist each curl and pin it in place loosely at the top of your head, and spritz with hairspray to give your hair extra hold. Once you’ve finished curling all your hair, take out the pins for curls that will last even longer. If you don’t have a curling iron then you can use straighteners as an alternative to using a curling wand and GHD IV Styler is one of the best on the market.

4. Finish the look

After you’ve curled all your hair, flip your head upside down and shake the curls out loosely whilst spraying with hairspray. Try to avoid brushing the curls out or pulling your fingers through your hair, because this can flatten the curl instead of adding body and volume.

To add texture to your 70s waves like the models at New York Fashion Week, spritz Oribe Dry Texturising Spray on the hair to build glamorous volume and tousled texture from root to tip. Whilst Oribe’s signature blend of plant extracts and antioxidants gives hair instant radiance and shine.
