DIY Terrarium!

We've been seeing a lot of really cool terrariums popping up on Pinterest lately and have been super antsy to make our own. We made terrariums for ourselves and for Sam & Tony while they were in Mexico and we were house sitting for them. Making your very own terrarium is incredibly easy and is doable for under twenty dollars!

Here is what you'll need:

  • a medium sized glass bowl/container
  • pebbles/stones
  • activated charcoal
  • soil
  • whatever greenery you want!

Step 1) Add some of your pebbles to the bottom of the glass container. You want them to be around an inch thick because they're acting as faux filtration for the plants.

Step 2) Add a thin layer of your activated charcoal to help keep the smell and bacteria levels down.

Step 3) Add your soil

Step 4) Position your plants the way you want them and get them settled in formation

Step 5) Add more pebbles to the top for looks

Voila! Your terrarium is now complete!

Maintenance: Most terrarium care is low maintenace but it can vary depending on the plants you put in. Most of them require indirect sunlight and very little watering- like a half a cup a week if your container is open and if your terrarium is closed then it might not need water at all.Test the soil with your hand before watering. It should feel barely moist or damp if it needs water. You'll know your terrarium is too dry if your leaves wilt or if your moss becomes brown- add a little water and mist the leaves. You'll know you're overwatering if molds grow or your plants decay.

We got our glass container at Joann's Fabric for 5.99, each of our plants came from Walmart for 3.00 each, the activated charcoal came from Walmart for 7.00 and the pebbles (which we bought more of later on to put the finishing touches on both terrariums) came from Pet co. at 2.50 a bag.
