Friday question: What do you like most about getting older?

“There is a very great difference between older and old, the former being desirable and the latter being inevitable.” – Michelle Franklin

Growing older is fun and everybody’s doing it! You have more confidence than you did when you were younger, you’re cheerfully independent and you’re ready to conquer the world by storm. There are lots of things not to like about getting older, but behaving like a grown-up often feels surprisingly good. These years go by lightning fast, so today we stand still for a minute and discuss what we like most about growing older.

Yara: “Learning to love yourself, and accept yourself more. Flaws and all, to quote Beyoncé. When you’re younger, or just a romantic like me, you tend to wait for earth-shattering great loves. But I realise now that it’s a big error in our thinking that there’s someone on this planet who’s worthy of your love more than yourself. It taught me to treat myself better as I’m growing up.”

Marijn: “In the same year I’ve gotten my first grey hairs (really…) I learned not to be so afraid of confrontations and learning to trust my own judgement. To speak with Charlie Chaplin: ‘It feels liberating to free yourself from anything that’s not good for my health: food, people, things, situations. At first I called this attitude healthy egoism, but now I know that it is called loving oneself.’ Growing older you learn to do that more and more.”

Kelly: “Is this a joke? Haha, actually not a whole lot. Lately, I enjoy trying to love more and worry less. Whenever I’m not happy with yesterday, I’ll try something different today. You get what you put in. This applies to my relationships, career, health, and above all being mentally and spiritually at peace. As someone said about being 27-ish: ‘You may still think that you are in the gray area between being a child and an adult, but in reality, you are an adult.’ I’m afraid that’s true.

Emma: “I don’t feel that old yet! I’m only twenty, just graduated and enjoying the fact that I can choose what I want to learn now very, very much. I do have discovered where my strengths and weaknesses lie, and I’m ready to work with what I’ve got. I can’t wait to live a more independent life.”
