Master Bath (Before + After)
After months of showering in our powder bath downstairs–the master bathroom is finished and it’s everything we hoped it would be and more! It has easily upped my hygiene game as I now want to take multiple showers and baths a day… or just hang out in here because it’s just so pretty. The bathroom is long and narrow but, in working with the space that we had, (we took over the previous master bath plus cut into the room taking over two closets to gain extra space) it feels like a luxury to now have a separate bath tub, dual vanities, and a much larger shower than before to enjoy.
The master bath wasn’t horrible before but we definitely wanted to update the tile, extend the counter space and gain as much storage as possible. One area we didn’t realize would be such a game changer was the ability to raise the ceiling which makes the narrow bathroom feel much bigger now. Also simply removing the cabinetry that stuck out of the wall on the left gave more room to walk through the room.
The tub debate was a huge one. At first my guy and I thought nah, we don’t need a bathtub–just make the shower as big as possible. But after some convincing from our friend and interior designer, Deborah at Design Alchemy, along with our mothers about the need for a bathtub (somewhere in the house) once baby is here we caved in. As you can see it was a tight squeeze to fit it in and sits awfully close to our toilet… but I’m so happy we did it! And now at 8 1/2 months pregnant I’m looking forward to my evening bath routine every. single. day. We even ended up making the tub the focal point of the room and jazzed it up with moroccan inspired tile backsplash and lighting. In the evenings I dim the light and set the mood with candles–which has been oh so relaxing!
Another major bonus: dual vanities. We’ve never lived in a place where we could both brush our teeth at the same time, so this in itself feels like quite the luxury. How grown up is that? I’m obsessed with the mirrors above our sinks which are both medicine cabinets (recessed into the wall) for additional storage.
One tip my girlfriend gave me a few years back is: try to make your bathroom as spa-like as possible, that way you’ll love spending time in there. So since this is the fanciest bathroom I’ve ever had, my goal is to keep it as clean and organized as possible. To make this organization easy I picked up a bunch of baskets to stash things like my blow dryer, curling iron, extra toilet paper–future baby bath toys, etc. Also, we’re constantly playing music throughout our house and the bathroom is no exception. Now that our Sonos has it’s own lil shelf, this makes my evening baths even more enjoyable.
One area we saved a pretty penny on was going with a pre-built vanity as opposed to a custom vanity. We simply swapped out the hardware.
