Summer Sun Safety Tips with Goddess Garden Sunscreen

This post is sponsored by Goddess Garden Organics Sunscreen.

There’s a lot more to sun safety than just applying a good, natural mineral sunscreen. Our family spends a lot of time outside in the pool, at the beach, playing sports, and at school. May is skin cancer awareness month and we can all take a little more time to protect our skin from the suns damaging rays.

1. Remember to apply a good facial sunscreen every day! Goddess Garden Facial Sunscreen can be applied under your makeup and is safe for kids. You can get burnt even when you’re driving around town with the sunroof open.

2. Wear your sunglasses! Especially if you have light colored eyes, you’ll want to protect your eyes in the sun. I can’t go out without my sunglasses and it’s just as important for us to teach our children the same safety tips.

3. Wear hats. It doesn’t matter what type of hat, you will add a little extra protection to your face and you’ll be protecting your scalp. It’s really hard to apply sunscreen to your scalp (unless you’re bald), so a hat can be very helpful.

4. Wear UPF protective clothing! In summer we don’t usually think about wearing clothing that covers our skin, but the lightweight UPF protective clothing doesn’t have to be hot. Even your swimwear and cover-ups can have some UPF protection to them. My daughter and I have been testing out the Coolibar brand of sun protective clothing and have fallen in love. My daughter loves wearing swim shorts/skirts and rash guards instead of traditional bathing suits.

This is my daughter being “serious” as I take her picture in the Coolibar Swim Skort and Reversible Rash Guard

5. Stay out of the sun during peak sun hours. The sun is the hottest and most damaging in the middle of the day (around noon). If we can help it, we enjoy the outside early in the day or later in the day and try to avoid that mid-day heat.

6. Find shade – or make it! If you have to be outside during the hottest part of the day, find shade and enjoy it. We have football games every weekend and always stake out the most shaded area to watch the game. If you can’t find natural shade, bring a tent or umbrella.

7. Reapply your sunscreen every 1-2 hours. Even a good sunscreen like Goddess Garden needs to be reapplied after you’ve been outside; especially if you’ve been in the water.

How does your family protect their skin in summer (or year round)? Do you rely only on sunscreen? Have you tried mineral based sunscreens? You can read my last post on why natural sunscreens are so important.
