How To Style a Summer Headscarf or Turban

This probably falls under the category of TMI, but when I was in Thailand last autumn I managed to get sunburnt all along my hair parting. It was my fault for covering my entire body in SPF and not having enough common sense to also wear a sunhat, but the experience did teach me an important lesson and I’m now much more careful when stepping out in the sun.

But short of wearing SPF in your hair (does such a product even exist?) there’s not much you can do to protect your scalp beyond wearing a hat. And if it’s a breezy day that can feel like mission impossible. So this summer I’ll be playing around with silk headscarves, wraps and turbans. They’re completely windproof, shield your hair from the sun and look super-cool.

Also keen to try the look? Well here’s some turban, headscarf and headwrap inspiration to get you in the right frame of mind…

Unfortunately turbans and headscarves aren’t really a key trend for Spring/Summer 2015, so you have to search around a bit to find covetable designs. I’ve found that the best places to shop for summer hair accessories are Shopbop, Anthropologie, Free People and vintage stores (who doesn’t love rummaging through a bargain bin of silk scarves?), so make them your first port of call. Here are some standout designs to get you started.

And if you’re not quite sure how to turn a printed scarf into a turban follow this simple step-by-step guide. It’s actually much easier than you would think, so give it a try this summer!

Will you keeping safe from the sun in stylish headscarves, wraps and turbans this summer? How will you style the trend?
