Okay, let’s start with a bit of honesty… This post was cobbled together at the last minute because I spent most of previous week procrastinating (I’ve done every single Friends quiz on Buzzfeed). And that not-so-chic raincloud clipart is covering up an even-less-chic skip on the street. I promise normal post quality will return tomorrow, after the Bank Holiday, but until then let’s talk about rainy day dressing.
After weeks of relatively good weather (for the UK, at least) I’d pretty much forgotten how to dress for rainy days. So when I woke up to torrential rain on Wednesday I panicked and spent far too long getting dressed. Which is why I’ve put together this handy Rainy Day Dressing checklist for the next downpour. It’s basically common sense, yet I still manage to wear something totally inappropriate every time (hello suede Isabel Marant boots)!

A Trench Coat: In a perfect world it would be Burberry Prorsum, but their classic macs seem to get more expensive with each year that passes, making it virtually impossible to save up for one. I found my black Calvin Klein trench in a TK Maxx store years ago and still bring it out every spring.
Leather or Faux-Leather Trousers: Jeans get so tight and uncomfortable when they get wet, so on rainy days it’s best to stick to leather leggings as they’re almost completely waterproof.
Accessories That Aren’t Made From Suede or Canvas: How many pairs of suede shoes have you ruined over the years after stepping through puddles? My Isabel Marant Dicker boots aren’t in great shape for this very reason.
A Beanie or Hood: Umbrellas are more trouble than they’re worth. They flap around in the wind, becoming unusable, and when they do manage you keep you’re stuck carrying a soggy brolly around all day. So I try to have what Monica from The Elgin Avenue dubbed a “rain beanie” in my handbag at all times.
