On the Front Porch

Hey all,

Today I’m doing some Q & A for the Porch,

Porch is a home network that allows you to find the right professionals, get inspired, and manage your home, for free!

1. What is your DIY weapon of choice?

A: It may sound weird, but Liquid Nails. I’ve used Liquid Nails on everything from bathroom mirror frames to ceiling medalions. For some reason nothing else seems to work quite like it does!

2. One organization tip for the New Year.

A: I love this question. I’m about 30 weeks pregnant, and instead of doing the cleaning type of nesting, I organize. My tip is to SIMPLIFY! The less stuff you have to deal with the easier it is to keep it clean. Part with those things you barley use! When I do, it makes my life happier!

3. Three words that describe my blog.

A: Creative, unexpected, makeovers. I think I do and use some interesting things. Usually this is a result of trying to make a space look great without spending a ton of money! Since I renovate spaces in order to finish and sell houses, I chose “makeovers” as one of the three words. You will see a lot of before and afters on my blog.

4. Tell us about a time you had a DIY fail (we’ve all had them).

A: Most of the time, I just rework my fails until they work. I just re-did some lamp shades for the boy’s room makeover. I tried painting them….fail! I tried covering them in material…..fail! I finally ended up wrapping them in yarn, and I love them! (post to come soon).

Here’s a picture of my last yarned lamp shade

5. How did you become interested in blogging?

A: I started a blog when my husband deployed to Iraq. After I started looking at other blogs, I realized people blogged about home and garden. At that point, I had been renovating houses for 4-5 yrs, and was on my thrid house, so I started a DIY blog. I loved sharing information with people that had the same interest.

6. What is the strangest decoration in your house?

Nature sticks and branches. I am sort of obessed with them. My 9 yr old son even brought one home for me that I’ve hung above my living room mirror. He brought it home and said, “Mom, this looked like something you would like.”

7. Hardest part about blogging.

A: The time it takes. Balancing life with blogging is tough! I still work a small dietetics job, and have 5 kids….another on the way. I have noticed that I LOVE doing the projects, I just don’t always get around to photographing, editing, and posting about them.

8. If your life were a song, what would it be?

A: I’m not sure. What songs out there tie in an absolutly crazy life with being truly happy?

9. Pinterest or Facebook?

A: This is a tough one, but I love intereacting with people, so I’d have to say Facebook. Pinterest is more fun to look at though.

10. If your walls could be painted one color for the rest of your life, what would that color be?

A: Another tough question! I get tired of things really easy, so it would have to be a color where I could change accent color easily. Right now I have most of my walls painted a really light greige with a tint of blue. I think I could put about any color with it.

11. What are you exceptionally good at?

A: I would have to say creating a beautiful space for a really low cost. You have to make about everything in it yourself, and use as much free stuff as you can, but I can usually always get creative enough to do it. When we worked on my sister’s nursery, we needed something eye-catching on the wall, she lived in a different state, so when I flew in we drove past a “free pile” in someone’s yard. We ended up making this really cool wall decor out of someone’s free old door frame and some cards in the dollar section from a craft store.

12. What is the weridest thing you’ve collected?

A: I don’t really collect anything, but when I organzied my basement (craft area) this past summer, I had a zillion wicker balls! Why oh why do I have so many? I don’t really use them for much anymore, but I can’t seem to give them away!

13. New Year’s Resolution?

A: All of my New Year’s resolutions are about food. Less sugar, less overeating etc.. I would also like to get the last 10% done on the three rooms that I’m 90% finished with! Why can’t I get myself to just finish that last 10%?

14. What is a home trend you hope doesn’t exist in 100 years.

A: White anything. With 5 kids, 3 of them boys, and homeschooling, there’s no way things can stay white for two days at my house! I love white, but it’s totally unrealistic for me.

15. Favorite words to live by?

A: Do what you love, love what you do. Of course, I think priorites override doing what you always “love”. I have a lot of kids, and I make it my priority to invest a lot of time in them. It’s hard work, and doesn’t always fit my wiring. Many days I would rather tell them to take a hike so I can just paint trim in peace, but they are my first priority, and I only have one chance to do motherhood right, so I make tough choices sometimes. On the other hand, I feel so blessed to get to do “What I love”. I truly LOVE renovating and decrorating spaces, and I’m lucky that I’ve been able to make a job out of it!

Thanks so much to my friends at the Porch for asking me some fun questions and sharing my progress with their fans.
