Monster Granny Blanket

Granny Squares. One of the first crochet shapes every newbie to crochet learns to make. Because it teaches you how to combine stitches, how to make individual pieces and join them afterwards.Quick results is what every one likes.

A little later on you’ll learn about more varieties of squares and designs, about joining on the go. I started with the simple squares too and picked up on this very ambitious plan to make kingsize bedspread as you can read here.

Ambitious, or should I say naive? Of course I had absolutely no idea about amount of yarn needed, at that time I thought 10 balls looked like a whole lot you would never end up finishing. I had no idea of the time it would take to finish this and my squares are absolutely not perfect; they are tilting like little mills.

But after moving the pile of squares to Canada and back, never really touching them and always thinking ‘I should finish that blanket’, for some reason last week I got the spirit to finish it. For real this time. I mean, granny squares are not my favourite. The blanket is a whole lot of everything; a lot of squares, a lot of yarn, a lot of weight, a lot of work. BUT: the yarn is nice; 100% merino wool Bingo by Lana Grossa; All ends of the squares were already woven in; Blue is still my favourite colour, and I still love blankets; And the joy of finishing an old WIP is immeasurable.

So. There you have it. Let’s finish ‘da monsta’.

There were 32 squares in this bag, I made 3 extra to create a 5×7 squares rectangular blanket. Except for the last five, they are all joined-on-the-go now, by making two extra rows around each square. The squares measure about 30 cm or 12 inches, creating a blanket of more than 1.50×2.00 meters or 60×80 inches, weighing more than 2 kilos.

A border will be added soon. I calculated with my friend from Homemade Factory where I got the extra yarn, that it will take 3 balls to get around the blanket once with granny clusters of 3 US double crochet. My goal is to go around 4 times; 2 times with the dark midnight blue you see in the picture, and finally twice with the grey-ish blue.

I have a feeling I will update you soon!
