Surry Hills – baristas, boutiques and terraced houses

Although Sydney is a big metropole, it does not always feel that way. This is due to the fact that it is a conglomerate of a whole lot of suburbs, each with their own character.

I like that, because it makes it handy to explore Sydney. The suburbs are oversee-able parts of town, great for a day or half day of walking and exploring.

In the coming weeks I will put the coolest neighborhoods in the spotlight. Let’s kick this series off with Surry Hills; a leafy food, shop and design Mecca.

Cute window displays in Surry hills

I love the colors and decor of this Mexican restaurant. Nice name too; pretty girl.

Surry Hills’ streets consist of rows of charming terraced houses, and are lined with beautiful trees and greenery everywhere.

It’s charm grabbed me right away and I could definitely see myself living there.

There are also other architectural styles in Surry Hills. Older ones. Like this Police Station.

The area, especially its main streets like Crown Street and Bourke Street, is filled with bars, restaurants, small boutiques and cool design stores.

One of my favorite shops in Surry Hills is Holy Kitsch. I wrote about this unique store, filled to the brim with Mexican parafernalia and other cute kitsch, here. Don’t miss it! And when you are there, please say “Hi !” to owner Phill from me, will you?;-)

Terraces filled with hipsters everywhere. Baristas brewing quality coffees. Creative, bohemian and trendsetting.

You can get yourself great breads and pastries, artisanal and special beers and the yummiest ice-cream ever!

Messina has the most yummie ice-creams in interesting flavors. The one I bought was pandan-coconut. One of the best ice creams I ever had.

A bit of street art here and there, not always easy to spot. Nice and/or funny quotes and texts on walls and doors.

I’m looking for a cool cow-skull since years. I’m sure that one day I will run into one.

“Fill your life with colors.” Doesn’t that sound like me?!

Lots of people with young children and/or with dogs.

These two dogs were so cute and having so much fun playing with each other!

Conclusion: In Surry Hills hangs a peaceful, relaxed, hip vibe. I went there a couple of times and really liked it.

Be sure to grab the free Urban Walks Guide about Surry Hills before you head over there. It shows most of the cool spots and lines out a walk. Easy peasy!

Have you been to Surry Hills? What do you like most there? Any tips?
