#Girlboss (affiliate link) has been popular in the blogosphere lately, and for good reason. If you haven’t heard about it yet, #Girlboss is written by the founder and former CEO of Nastygal, Sophia Amoruso.

I’ll be honest: I spend a lot of time in PJs or similarly comfortable clothing and wasn’t super familiar with Nastygal before hearing about this book, except maybe to see an ad or mention in passing on a client site. For those of you like me, here’s the quick version: Sophia started Nastygal as an eBay store by herself and has since grown it into a multimillion dollar business with 350 employees. I’ll let her tell you the rest, but what makes her story stand out is not her success, but her attitude.

In this book, Sophia demonstrates a talent for uncomplicating business. If I could sum up this book in a single idea, it’s this: show, don’t tell. Sophia attributes her successes not to any special knowledge or background, but to simple action. If it sells, offer more products like it. If it doesn’t, let it go. Treat customers like you do your friends. Assume your customers appreciate the kind of details you do. Take pride in every aspect of your work, even the grunt work. Running a business isn’t as complicated as we make it out to be, it just means doing the work.

Ultimately, I found Sophia to be a great example of figuring things out as you go along and often found myself nodding along to the advice she was giving. She has an interesting story, and though most of the advice is common sense, it’s the kind of advice we could all stand to be reminded of on a regular basis.
