Why it’s good to figure things out as you go along

If there is anything I’ve learned from owning a business, it’s that it’s totally OK to figure things out as you go along. No one really knows how to run a business until they do it for themselves. You are constantly making decisions, big and small, that you can’t possibly prepare for in advance or know with certainty that you’re doing it right. All you can do is try it out, see what happens, and adjust for the next situation.

That may sound discouraging, but I actually find it empowering. You see, the great thing about figuring things out as you go along is that you gain confidence along the way. For starters, you gain confidence in yourself. The more you figure out how to do, the more you realize you can really figure out anything you want. You stop worrying about how you’re going to get things done and accept that you’ll figure it out in time.

But the best part? You gain a sense of clarity and understanding for why you do what you do. You can’t truly understand why something is wrong for you until you’ve experienced it.

Everything about my business exists because of what I’ve learned from past experiences. I can back up my own policies because I know what it was like not to have them. I know why I do something one way instead of another because I’ve tried both, and one way worked better for me. Sure, you can learn from the mistakes of others, but nothing can replace the conviction you get from the mistakes you make yourself.
