WordPress quick tip: Customize your feed footer

Something I say often is that the people who love your blog posts are also probably the people who will love your email list. So it makes sense to point them to your email list at the end of your blog posts. That’s why so many people add signup forms immediately following their blog posts.

But there’s another not-so-obvious place you can add a call-to-action: your feed footer. After all, people who read your blog through a feed reader like Feedly may never even visit your site!

A not-so-obvious place to add a call-to-action? Your feed footer!

It’s easy to do, simply install the WordPress SEO plugin by Yoast, or the RSS Footer plugin if you don’t want the additional SEO features. Then go to your WordPress dashboard under SEO > RSS. You’ll see a couple of boxes to add HTML to appear before or after your feed item. I personally like to use the footer so I’m giving people a next step after they read my post. Here’s the message that appears after my posts:

Short and sweet, but it does two things: reminds readers of my web address, and encourages them to receive my emails (with a link directly to my signup page). You’ll need to add the HTML code for your links, which looks like this:

your link text here

I also wrapped all my text in italics to separate it from the rest of my post. And that’s it! Now people who read your blog through a feed reader will know about your list, too.
