Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Football Dip

Superbowl Sunday is upon us. I couldn’t be more excited. Okay, that’s clearly a lie. I really couldn’t care less especially since I’m not from Seattle or Denver, but anything that involves forming sweets into inanimate objects to celebrate an event is fun for me! I’ve done engagement rings, minions, princesses, and of course teeth, but no sports paraphernalia yet, so here we are! I’ve seen cookie dough dip all over the internet and I’ve seen dips formed into footballs for the big day, so I came up with this little (and by little, I mean giant) way to make it totally reasonable to inhale inappropriate amounts of cookie dough this Sunday.

Cheese balls are a regular at Super Bowl party lineups, but we don’t do cheddar here at Sweet Tooth so I’m switching it up with some chocolate chip cookie dough. Since regular cookie dough would be hazardous to guests’ health and regular eggless cookie dough is too stiff to cut through with a Nilla wafer, I added whipped cream to lighten things up. I’ve seen a lot of recipes that use cream cheese to do this, but I thought that would totally change the flavor profile and I didn’t want that. I wanted creamy, spreadable chocolate chip cookie dough that tasted like cookie dough, not cookie dough cheesecake. Although that does sound pretty good, just a little different for what I was going for. Turns out adding whipped cream (or Cool Whip if you want to skip a step) did the trick and still stayed firm enough to shape into a football. To finish it off I covered the football-shaped mound with chopped chocolate, but you could also use chocolate sprinkles, Oreo crumbs, or mini chocolate chips. Piped white chocolate finished up the laces and dip accompaniments laid out with team colors finish off the gimmicky yet irresistible spread.

Of course this delicious cookie dough concoction doesn’t need to be dressed up like a football if you’re not planning on watching the big game – just place it in a bowl and serve it at any party and it’s sure to be a hit. There’s no baking here, not even butter that needs to be warmed to room temperature, just a bunch of household ingredients pulled together and served with whatever you thinks goes best dipped in cookie dough. Although I was tempted to put chocolate chip cookies on the plate, I thought that was a little chicken-and-the-egg so opted for vanilla wafers instead. And even though I’ll be on call (thus, sober) watching a game I don’t fully understand on Sunday, at least I’ll have cookie dough dressed up like a football. Go team!

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Dip

2 cups all purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1 cup heavy cream, whipped
1 cup mini semisweet chocolate chips or finely chopped chocolate
Chopped chocolate, chocolate sprinkles, or mini chocolate chips for topping
Melted white chocolate for laces
Pretzels, vanilla wafers, apples, or other desired sides

In a small bowl whisk together the flour and salt. In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat together the melted butter, sugars, and vanilla until smooth. With the mixer on low, add the flour until just incorporated.

Add half of the whipped cream and beat until smooth. With a rubber spatula, fold in the rest of the whipped cream. Add the mini chocolate chips or chopped chocolate and keep mixing until well distributed.

Form the cookie dough in the shape of a football and cover with more chopped chocolate, chocolate sprinkles, or mini chocolate chips. Melt white chocolate in a ziploc bag in the microwave and snip off the edge so you can pipe the laces on. Arrange sides around the football and enjoy!
