Hexagon Embroidery Tutorial

Simple handmade projects always make me happy! I love the detail and talent that goes into more complex projects, but I don’t have the patience for them. I’m easily distracted by other crafty ideas swirling around in my head, so I stick to simple ideas with big impact.

I’ve been in love with hexagons for awhile, but I’ve never made anything using them. Shocker, right?!

Last week we had a rainy day where the temperatures dropped like crazy. I’m a true Florida Girl and that just makes me want to stay inside every single minute of the day creating something pretty or cooking up lots of food. I understand some people love Winter, but I’m not one of them.

I realized I have a basket {or two} full of beautiful embroidery supplies. Did I want to go through the trouble of using one of my pretty iron on patterns? Nope.

I wanted quick! I wanted something beautiful without worrying about using the right color thread for a leaf. {I tend to stress over color choices!}

Then I noticed this fabulous stash of embroidery thread that had to be used.

In less than a minute I came up with my plan to create a hexagon pattern that would be filled with beautiful colors.

Here’s how you can create your own little embroidery hoop art right now!

I happened to have a hexagon punch, so I used it on some packaging tape that I had on my desk. It stuck to the fabric just enough to create nice lines for the pattern.

If you don’t have a punch like this you can easily find hexagons online that you can print and cut out to use as your pattern piece. Try to cut it out of tape if you can. It made the pattern making so much better than a piece of paper that moves around.

Just trace it and move your sticky hexagon wherever you want…easy peasy and awesome!

I used a grey cotton suit material that I had from the fabric store.

The hoop is 6 inches wide. Not too big, not too small.

The colorful embroidery thread can be found on Amazon. I love how it changed colors for me!

It made my life so much easier, and it created such a great look!

The embroidery thread has 6 strands. I separated it out into three strands because I usually like to work with less chunky thread. It takes a bit of time to do this extra step, but I always like the results.

My top tip…work slower than you would think or you will get knots. Knots are evil.

I varied the direction I worked the thread in each hexagon. Once I finished I went back around the edges to create a clean line. Otherwise it would be all lumpy and bumpy there. Not a good look…ever.

I worked on it for a few hours and finished it up the next day with the sun shining through the front windows. A cup of coffee, Serenity Essential Oil in the diffuser, a fun little creative project and sunshine. Pretty relaxing, for sure!

See how easy it is to create your own hexagon embroidery hoop art!
