Easy Homemade Decor Accents

***Sorry for the lateness of this post!***

I spent a lot of this week and last cleaning up, decluttering our space and coming up with a plan for each space that needs work in my home. Since we have finally made a solid decision to turn our dining room into a more usable space for us I have been working on some small decorative pieces to put on the shelves above our desks because they are bare and boring! We got these planks from Home Depot and stained them in a driftwood grey. As you can see repairs need to be made in the wall above Matt’s shelf where we once had other things hanging so that is job one. (I will get a wider shot of the whole room for you guys later on so you can see the layout better.)

Our overall aim for this area is for it to be functional and diverse. It is home to our computers but we also want to add some greenery, have an area for a little bar cart, a pretty new dog bed for Prince, and a space where people can come and gather, have drinks and socialize. I like to try and mix the handmade stuff with new for a more personalized space. The first mini project was painting this beautiful branch with leftover green and gold paint for a two tone look.

This is a really inexpensive way to add a quirky touch of nature to your place. The branch was free and the paint was what I had left from furniture projects. I didn’t peel off the bark because I wanted to keep that bumpy texture. If you like a smooth look just let the branch dry out for a day and peel off the bark. I pared it down a little so I was just left with the main part. I didn’t need all the extra little twigs so I just popped them off. I lay some wax paper down on my kitchen counter and got to work painting. My branch was dry after a few hours and I am very happy with the result!

This will probably go over on Matt’s shelf. For my shelf, I really want to do an animal theme and something more rustic/old looking. I took this wooden candle holder from the bunch of cheap bare wood items Dollarama sells and stained it a dark walnut.

My aim was to make it look kind of like a barn with some plastic animal figurines and Spanish moss and I think it worked out great! I have gathered a few more things, and I am tweaking, re-working and experimenting but I hope to have some kind of reveal soon!
