Choosing Fabrics to Suit Your Home's Style

Hello! It's Jessica from House Homemade. I'm so thankful to be back on the fabric.com blog! Today I'm talking about picking fabric that works well with your home style. Sewing new curtains or throw pillows for a room can completely change the space or work to drive home the look you're wanting. I know that for some people, choosing fabric from pages and pages of options on a website or rows and rows of choices in a store can be overwhelming. And even if that part isn't overwhelming, you might just need to put a name and a few visuals to help you define the look you're wanting. If any of this is you, hopefully I can help out today and start you down the path of finishing out a space with the perfect pick in fabric.
Now, I'm all about the eclectic look. My advice is 'if you like it, use it'. I love mixing and matching fabrics and patterns between styles. I know, though, that some people like to stick with a specific feel for their space.
So here we go. Below, you'll read about five different styles that I feel are trending and what fabrics I would use to achieve each look!
Vintage
First up, I'll start with the vintage look. I think these can best be identified as a retro feel with graphic patterns. To me, they feel casual and fun. I think the best way to get an updated vintage look in your home is to use more neutral, modern colors like the ones below.
I used the first fabric in our bedroom when I first did a post for fabric.com about pattern mixing. You can find that post here. Again, my taste is totally eclectic. You don't have to stick to one particular style.
To complete the vintage look, pair any of these fabrics with brass, hairpin legged tables, mid century mod furniture, plants and wood tones.

Chic
The next style board I created is chic and these fabrics make me so happy. They say 'look at me' whether it's because of the prints, the colors, the scale or all three. These are bold and clean and glam.
If chic is what you're going for, these fabrics can be paired with colorful or neutral walls. Clean, modern lines, bright whites and lots of textures.

Farmhouse
I did my fair share of searching for farmhouse fabrics when I was helping with the decorating of my parents house out in the country. The farmhouse look consists of neutrals in greys, taupe and whites on casual woven or linen looking fabric. Lots of traditional pattern but in very muted, monochromatic colors.
I didn't pick this for my design board but in my parents house we used this fabric as curtains on an entire wall in their living room. Since this print was a little more bold, I chose some fabrics like the ones above for pillows and upholstery. You can see more of their house here.
For the farmhouse look, pair these fabrics with natural or white washed wood tones, burlap, clean lines, white paint and elements from nature like leaves, plants, or.....antlers.

Modern Traditional
The next grouping you might like is modern traditional. I think of this as a more updated take on classic prints.
Any of these could work for curtains, as upholstery on dining chairs or as throw pillows in a traditional looking home style.

I picture these fabrics with polished metal finishes, bright white woods and clean, crisp wall colors.
Boho
I saved my favorite for last. Boho is trending right now. To me, it's a mixture of tribal prints, a throwback to the 70's and a natural look. These fabrics are mostly neutral and very imperfect in such a relaxed, laid back way.
You may recognize the 4th fabric as I used it (in orange) to upholster a small wall in our hallway. It's such a cool print. You can see that project here.

While we're talking about outdoor projects. I might have sprinkled some outdoor fabrics into this post. Don't discount them. Most are great for indoor use as well and with kids and/ or pets, why not have something way more durable?
A boho style is all about warm wood tones, wicker, plants, and wall hangings. Pair these fabrics with a plush, textured rug, a vintage chair, fringe or tassels and lots of greenery.
