ASICS GEL-Fit Sana Review

Disclaimer: I was provided with a pair of ASICS GEL-Fit Sana shoes at no cost. I was not required to write a positive review, all opinions are my own.

I was contacted recently by ASICS on Twitter asking if I would like to try out their new GEL-Fit Sana shoe. I jumped at the chance to try out a new shoe.

I went to the ASICS website to order my shoes and my first thought was one of a little concern. Here I am coming back from a long layoff with a bruised foot, and this is a lightweight shoe with a description that mentions a barefoot feel.

Here is the description from the ASICS website:
“The GEL-Fit Sana™ features a Flexible Fit system with flexible support bands from heel to forefoot, to provide adaptable support in designated areas. Designed with a stretchable mesh upper and MONO-SOCK® upper construction, it gives a sock-like fit and feel that makes for a secured comfortable wear. A smooth inner lining and lightweight, low-profile midsole gives this GEL-Fit Sana™ a barefoot-like sensation and an overall customized fit.”

I thought it was worth a try – I didn’t injure my foot running on bad shoes – I have a tendency to think that the more cushioned shoe, the better, but maybe that’s not the case.

So, I picked out these pretty blue shoes and went for it.

Shipping from the ASICS website was easy and fast. When my shoes arrived, I was so excited to try them out.

I actually broke them in with an afternoon of errands, and really liked the way the mesh toe box felt. They were very comfortable. I really really hate feeling my toes bang against a toe box.

I finally got to take them out for a run the other morning. And, the verdict is that they were great. I was pleasantly surprised that my foot felt cushioned and well supported. I did use my regular running shoe insoles instead of the factory insole. They’re nothing fancy, just a little store bought arch support to even out the impact on my foot.

That first run was a short run of only 30 minutes. I’ve now worn them for a few more runs. I think they are best suited for me for shorter runs. I wore them for a 5 miler the other day and I could feel the ache in my foot creeping back. So that’s probably a limit distance for them for me.

Pros:
– The mesh upper of the shoe takes away the pounding that my toes often take in running shoes
– There is plenty of cushion on the shoe – for shorter runs.
– The look! I love the color!

Cons:
– I wore long pants when I ran and the laces came untied even though they were double knotted. Kind of annoying, but my pant leg was rubbing on them, so note to self: wear tights or capris with these shoes
– I’m not sold on the size I chose. With the mesh toe box, I almost felt like I didn’t need the extra half size that I usually get with running shoes. Since I ordered them online, I didn’t get to try sizes. I may have still gone for my running shoe size, but I don’t know. They don’t feel big at all, but there is some room.
– Not quite enough support for me for longer runs. Plenty of support for 3-4 miles.

Thank you ASICS for the chance to try out your shoes. These guys definitely earned their spot in my shoe rotation and I’m really excited to have a shoe option that makes my toes so happy and not squished.
