Gingham & Ruffles

Gingham and ruffles. Sounds kind of twee, looks kind of cool….

Gingham trousers are 100% in my ‘buy now for Spring’ list if I had such a list, and while monochrome checks were all good in the winter, right now blue gingham is my picnic-blanket print of choice. The cutesy ruffled sneakers are clean, preppy and country club appropriate (all the things I’m not very good at being), but I decided to embrace the preppiness on my bottom half at least, and team the frilly tennis shoes with tailored gingham trousers. For me, the key for saving this from going full-on wasp is keeping the trousers long, just touching the ankle so they’re in no way a ‘capri’. Once upon a time I would have thought this length was the dorkiest thing ever but with these trainers, a biker jacket and a t-shirt that’s a little too baggy, it works.

Even the pink wall can’t make this ensemble cutesy which is saying something. I’d also wear these trousers with these Saint Laurent sandals or these Mango slides if I didn’t want to be quite as grungy. I’m going to be doing another post soon on the little additions and tweaks I’m feeling right now that can take the basics you already have into Spring so if you like this stay tuned in the next few weeks for that…
