DIY Container Gardening Grow Box

One of my fairly new passions is gardening. I get really excited about it! One thing about gardening that can be kind of frustrating, it is pretty much trial and error. I have lost many plants to over or under watering. That is why this DIY Container Gardening Grow Box is great, it takes the guess work out of watering.

Over the years, I have gotten a pretty bad reputation as a plant murderer. I have always liked the idea of gardening, but have never been great about maintaining what I have planted. At one point the lady who works at our local garden center asked me, “Why don’t you just come visit the plants here instead of taking them home and killing them?” Harsh!

In the past year, I have become very interested in starting a garden and growing my own food. Before I finally made that dream a reality, I would seriously day dream about it. I started quite an impressive Pinterest gardening board and I would talk to my husband about it constantly. I got a lot of teasing because of my past experience with plants but I wanted to prove that I was reformed and I could indeed keep plants alive! If I can do it, anyone can!

I currently have growing in my container garden, tomatoes, squash, cucumber, rosemary, oregano, mint, strawberries, peppers, carrots, chamomile, beans, an avocado tree, lettuce and the cutest baby lemons you have ever seen! Not all the plants are producing but they are all trying and that my friend, is progress!

Today I am going to show you how to make a grow box that is great to grow vegetables in. because it is aerated and has drainage, you can not over water. They are easy and inexpensive to build. My lovely friend Michelle taught me how to make them and for that, I am grateful. I hope you will make one and grow lots of amazing things. It really is, so fun!

Materials Needed

-18 gallon storage bin with lid. You want plastic safety number 5. That is the # on the inside of the arrow triangle, on the bottom of the box.

– 12 zip ties

– 1 inch PVC pipe cut the length you would like for ease of watering. (longer if you dont want to bend over, shorter if it is going to be on top of a table)

– Drainage pipe with slits in it. Enough for four, 6 inch pieces.

– drill

– razor box cutter

Directions

(The lid will become the table top.)

1. Using the box cutter cut four, 3.5 inch holes in the corners of the inner part of lid. This is where you will attach the legs.

2. Drill 1.5 inch hole for watering tube (PVC) into your table top (lid).

3. Drill 3 holes, equally spaced around the 3.5 inch hole. These will be used to attach the legs.

4. Drill a bunch of holes in top of lid for aeration.

5. Cut lid with box cutter along the outside part of the indention.

6. Cut four pieces of drainage pipe into 6 inch lengths. These will be your legs.

7. Use zip ties to attach the legs to the table top using the 3 holes you drilled arond your 3.5 inch holes.

8. Drill a 1/2 inch hole in the center of both ends of your box, 4 inches up from the bottom. This is for drainage.

9. Put table top in box. Put watering pipe in 1.5 inch hole in table top. (Make sure watering pipe is in place before you add dirt.)

10. Fill with potting media and plant whatever you like. When watering, (I do 1-2 times a week, depending on the heat and if it has rained) add water to watering tube until it starts to come out the side holes.

Enjoy!
