Capsule wardrobes are a great way to organize what you want to pack for a trip, whether it’s for a few days or a lot longer.

For a ski trip, the same rules apply, but with a bit of a twist. You’re not only packing what to wear on the slopes, you need to have outfits for après-ski.

This capsule wardrobe splits the difference by choosing mostly items that can be worn for both; mixed and matched, it should last you for a full week-long ski trip. Remove a top or two if you’re taking a shorter trip.

Tops. Even if you’re not a turtleneck mama the rest of the season, outdoor winter sports call for extra warmth. (And these HeatTech tops from Uniqlo are my favorites; warm, yet very lightweight and so affordable.) Pile on a fleece jacket or chunky sweater and you’re ready to hit the slopes—or the fireplace in the lodge!

Bottoms. You’ll be in snow pants all day, so you only need a couple of pairs of bottoms to rotate through the week. The fleece leggings go nicely with the longer sweater, and can even double up as sleepwear, and the straight leg jeans go with anything. (Don’t like the plaid pattern? Any dark wash will do.)

Underwear. Long johns, thermals, long underwear; whatever you call ‘em, you need ‘em. Silk is ideal, but there are great options in synthetic fabrics, too. Bring at least two pairs: one to wear and the other to hang up to air out; rotate daily. Ditto for wool socks; two pair minimum, but more if you have room in your bag.

Outerwear. The ski jacket is both practical and in a pattern that could last all winter long. Complete your look with a ski hat, scarf and UV protective sunglasses.

Shoes. A ski trip practically begs for fuzzy snow boots. These two options could also work the rest of the winter, too; who says après-ski is only on the mountain?
