New York: A Little Rundown.

I wanted to make the first of my New York posts more of a personal post, with the rest being more ‘city guides’ and what I recommend doing, eating etc. – we packed in SO much when we were over there, and I think I did, saw and ate everything I wanted to.
We saw so many of our friends whilst we were there; a lot of lovely Californian babes that Jordan has friended through gigging, one of our favourite couples from here in Glasgow, as well as so many new people while we were here. Americans are friendly!

We stayed in Brooklyn, on Atlantic Avenue – I was in two minds about where to stay, surely it made more sense to be in Manhattan, surrounded by the buzz and tall buildings? We had a wedding to go to while we were there, which was held in Brooklyn, but it was only for a day and we were there for over a week… but something about the sound of Brooklyn lured us in and we booked a beautiful, beautiful Airbnb apartment, complete with skyline view. If you haven’t used Airbnb before, I really recommend it – I use it for every trip, it’s so much more comfortable (and comforting) to stay in an apartment rather than a hotel, I feel, and you can really choose a Pinterest-worthy place to make your own.
Our apartment was an awesome converted warehouse, with exposed brick and incredible views. I mean really, where else would you stay on a visit to Brooklyn?!

The wedding was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen, it was straight off my Pinterest board. Our amazing friends Doug and Diana chose the Green Building in Brooklyn, a raw space complete with exposed brick and a real Brooklyn vibe. If I ever get married, it will be here.
They had peonies and cacti everywhere, lots of local beer and food trucks instead of a proper meal – think tacos from one, lobster and mac ‘n’ cheese from another, and a big pile of donuts for after. We danced to ’90s classics… it was heaven.

Also while we were there, I met up with my parents! I said earlier in the year that my parents had sold our family home to buy a boat to sail the world. They started off in Florida, before heading to Miami and then sailing all the way up the East Coast. We met them in the Liberty Landing Marina, which is in New Jersey. The went on the Sunday, which was our first full day in the city – and it was HOT! That morning we walked all the way through Brooklyn, across the Brooklyn bridge, all the way up Fifth Avenue and found a little breakfast spot. I think we walked around 8 miles before breakfast! It was super hot, around 30 degrees C, and by lunchtime we were done in. We got an Uber over to the landing marina as soon as my parents arrived for a lazy afternoon on the boat.
The marina had the best view of the skyline, and the boat across from us had a tiny dog with a little lifejacket on. By the time evening arrived, it had started to rain – which then turned in to a storm! We watched lightening light up the New York skyline from the top of the boat – it was incredible!
We weren’t planning to stay the night, but the weather was grim and the boat holds up to ten people so we bunked down in one of the rooms. How cute?!

Other highlights included meeting with Bloglovin’ to work on a little feature for them; we took some photos in the Whitney Museum of Art – this has the most amazing view, and we managed to get some awesome windswept pictures.
We also took a walk along the Highline, which was awesome – I tried to find another time to go back with Jordan but we didn’t end up squeezing it in.
More cocktails were consumed, too…

Around this time, Jordan and I figured out we could both do an amazing Brooklyn gangster accent. Mine was basically Morello from OITNB (“CWISTAFAHH”), but Jordan’s best lines were “Hey Louie, you got yah onion drippings on my new Italian shoes!” and “he was the best garlic shaver on 54th”, “she was a dumb broad!” and “Paulie only ever said six words at a time”. I highly recommend you try this out next time you’re in NYC.

We also shopped a lot, drank a LOT of iced coffee – seriously, I could not get enough of iced coffee while I was over there. I have brought this obsession back with me, too. I also took a lot of photos of donuts, because donuts. I figured out quite quickly that my stomach wasn’t getting along with the carby foods over there, which was very sad… but I just took photos instead!
I was in awe every time I entered a supermarket, America just has everything! We were hungover in Brooklyn after the wedding, and after heading to Dough to try the donuts, we stumbled across this supermarket with an entire wall of ice cream. There were brands I hadn’t heard of (saying something) and endless flavours – banana choc chip cookie crumble salted caramel gelato, and flavour combos like that! Incredible scenes.
Also, strawberry margarita in a can. Hotdogs. There are no words.

I was considering buying a bag while I was over there, either Kate Spade or Rebecca Minkoff, but in the end I didn’t really see anything that took my fancy… and I have a kitchen to pay for. I also consumed a LOT of pancakes, we don’t really have any pancake places in Glasgow so I went crazy on the first couple of days. Americans know their pancakes, y’all hear me. Gorgeous.

We met up with Jonny and Immy, our Glasgow friends (although Immy is English, Jonny is Irish but whatever) for a walk around Central Park, followed by some rooftop cocktails. They were staying at the Knickerbocker in Times Square, so we had some drinks on the rooftop in the St. Cloud bar. We went early evening when it was still light, but stayed until every building around us was twinkling.
We left late, and had a walk through Times Square and down to Grand Central Station at night before catching the subway home. It was one of those unplanned nights that turned in to something unforgettable.

Of course, a trip to Sprinkles was on the cards – but more of this in my foodie post…

Look out for more NYC updates over the coming days!
