Oktoberfaust with Beer Nouveau and Open Kitchen Manchester

I always love the idea of Oktoberfest. Steins, beer, wurst and hot buttery pretzels. Sweet mustard. More beer.

But the reality is often a bit… Meh. The beer is, well, wet? I mean, it’s beer, but there’s no celebration of the great German styles of beer that are out there. The food, is OK, but only that, and the price? I’m not sure I want to sit in a damp tent with an oompah band drinking OK beer for any price.

So when Beer Nouveau suggested Oktoberfaust, it caught my attention. A great selection of beer styles, Helles, Pils, Kolsh – from a number of local (and further afield) breweries – rather than just some unnamed lager from a tank.

Then of course the food, would come from Open Kitchen. They’d take on the theme of Oktoberfest and fill our tummies with food that would otherwise go to waste. And they were most definitely up to the challenge!

Our welcome glass of beer in hand, we went to investigate.

Pretzels and mustard (I bloody love pretzels), sausages inna bun, slathered with more mustard and topped with sauerkraut. They outdid themselves.

As for the beers, we went from crisp clean lagers, through to some softer, sweeter pours. And of course, for the non-beer drinkers, there were cider and spirit options.

Of course, Oktoberfaust is over – for this year anyway. But their regular Surplus event is only a couple of weeks away. The next is 8 November – kicking off the weekend with delicious treats made with food that would otherwise be discarded.

I’ll be going. See you there?
