BOOK CLUB | February

Hey guys! I thought I'd start a new feature on what I've been reading lately. I don't know about you, but I'm always looking for good book recommendations. I was really lucky to get a Kindle from Aidan's mum and dad for Christmas and I love it! When I first saw them I was all NOTHING WILL REPLACE REAL BOOKS but I've been converted. I was also a snob about mp3 players when they came out but obviously I've changed my tune since then. Anyway, buying books for my Kindle has become a dangerous new hobby because you just click 'purchase' and it automatically MAGICALLY appears on your Kindle! WHAT?!

JUST KIDS | Patti Smith I saw Pip rave about this book on her blog, and even though I'm not super familiar with Patti Smith's music, I decided to give it a go. I love musician memoirs, and I thought that this one might be a bit more highbrow than, say, Dirt by Motley Crue. It was such a beautifully written book and I really liked that it dealt with her life before she was 'famous', and it gives a wonderful view of what life was like for artists in New York during the '60s and '70s. I knew she was an awesome musician but I didn't know just how hard she worked for it, and it made me appreciate her music a lot more. Read it! It's amazing.
WHY IS MY MOTHER GETTING A TATTOO? AND OTHER QUESTIONS I WISH I DIDN'T HAVE TO ASK | Jancee Dunn I've read Jancee Dunn's memoir But Enough About Me so, so, so many times. I bought it when I was in year eleven or twelve in high school and as dorky as it may sound, I think it really influenced me to pursue a career as a journalist. I kind of have that creepy feel that we would be friends in real life given the opportunity. She seems rad. Anyway, this book is more of a collection of essays rather than a full on life story, so it's really easy to get into. Her family sounds just as hilarious as she is and the stories made me snort with laughter a few times. SNORT. What more do you need?
THE PSYCHOPATH TEST | Jon Ronson I don't really read a lot of non-fiction, but when I saw this in my Amazon recommendations I thought I'd give it a crack. It's one of those books where you just want to scream in frustration because it's so amazing and you're the only one experiencing it and you want everyone to know how great it is. I wasn't expecting it to hook me in as much as it did - who knew psychopaths were so interesting? Apart from EVERYBODY because I'm sure we all have a bit of a weird fascination with them. Although between this and my obsession with Criminal Minds, I'm a little suspicious that everyone I know could be a secret psychopath. Maybe. You never know... O____O
THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER | Stephen Chbosky I haven't read any YA fiction in a while. I know people rave about how you can read it at any age and it's still great, but it usually just ain't my thing. I did like this book - it's written in a really interesting way and the main character Charlie is very sweet and likeable - but to be honest, I think I've seen "And in that moment, I swear we were infinite" and "We accept the love we think we deserve" splashed all over tumblr in the form of tattoos, those stupid 'text over a picture of space' photos, etc for me not to roll my eyes a little when they came up in the book. I'd be interested to see how much the movie differs from the book. I read it in a day so it's a nice easy book to get through on holidays.
