Blue Monday: 18 January 2021

The third Monday in January is always designated as Blue Monday. It’s a day when holiday celebrations are over, the weather is cold and dreary, and credit card bills for the gifts are due. It’s even harder this year with the pandemic and the recent insurrection. I’ve seen a lot of people post in the last two weeks that they are feeling exhausted from everything. The last year is taking a toll on our mental health and it’s a good time to figure out if you just a little blue or perhaps need professional help for severe depression. There are some things you can do to lift your spirits like take a walk in nature, connect with a friend, clean out clutter or your closet and donate things you don’t need, spend time with animals or adopt a pet, log off social media and read a book, binge a new show or volunteer. There are studies that helping others makes us happier and today also happens to be Martin Luther King, Jr. day which “is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.” I bought myself some flowering quince branches last week and they are about to bloom and they are definitely making me feel better today.
