Estee Lauder Double Wear Nude Water Fresh Makeup: Review and Swatches

For Fall 2017, Estee Lauder is expanding the Double Wear family with a new foundation called the Double Wear Nude Water Fresh Makeup ($48 CAD). Available in 12 shades, this new addition is advertised as a medium-coverage, long-wearing foundation that provides a sun protection of SPF 30. Formulated with a "moisture complex" consisting of extracts of watermelon, lychee, and apple, the foundation promises a fresh, light, and hydrating wear. The Double Wear Nude foundation comes in a simple and elegant frosted glass bottle. Unfortunately, the packaging is not equipped with a pump dispenser. This is pretty disappointing considering that most foundations (even drugstore options) come with one nowadays. Therefore, it's a lot trickier to dispense the product and there's a higher chance of contamination.

As I've mentioned in my review for the Guerlain Aqua Nude Foundation, foundations with the word "water" in their name tend to make me very apprehensive as more often than not, the formulation ends up being thin and clingy, settling into pores and emphasizing skin textures.
Unfortunately, this is exactly the case with the Double Wear Nude. Although lightweight and easy to spread, the formulation immediately emphasizes pores and uneven skin textures. To see what I mean, take a look at the patch of skin right underneath the inner tip of my eyebrow. Instead of gliding and smoothing over the skin, the formulation actually emphasizes and highlights skin imperfections that I normally wouldn't even notice. With that said, the coverage is not bad for a medium-coverage foundation and there was no noticeable oxidization of the color. I have swatched here "1N2 Ecru", a light cool tone ivory, and "2N1 Desert Beige", a light warm tone beige.

Aside from the problematic texture, the Double Wear Nude also has a very dewy finish that doesn't quite dry down. When I tried to do a little light blotting after five or so minutes, a visible layer of pigments transferred from my skin onto the blotting paper. Additionally, because the formulation doesn't fully set, I am constantly aware of its presence on my face and the sensation is not very pleasant. I think that because I have oily skin, the moist, dewy finish feels like a slick and greasy veil.
So all in all, this was not the foundation for me. I think it can be made the case that this formulation is probably designed for those with very dry to dry skin but considering that it's not smoothing or cushioning, I wouldn't recommend it even to those with dry skin.
