Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and whether you’ve got a big date with a long-time significant other, new flame, or if you’re flying solo, you’ll want to look your best. Here’s the first of two looks we’re publishing this week for some ideas to help you dress to impress and spend your Valentine’s Day in style.

I’ve never been a big fan of forcing a holiday-specific color into a holiday outfit. For me, it’s too obvious and unoriginal. How many other dudes are you going to see out there wearing red? Instead, keep it simple, sleek, and elegant with a dark blazer, turtleneck, and trousers. Let your date stand out with something red. It’s all about her anyway, right?

If you are going to incorporate some red into your outfit, do it subtly. The thin red plaid in this topcoat and the deeper burgundy of my pocket square are small accents and subtle nods to Valentine’s Day without being too overt.

My best Valentine’s Day style tip? Stay away from that solid color bright red shirt and thin black tie at all costs. It’s not bold. It’s a bad cliché and not very inventive. Think about adding in patterns and textures. You’ll actually stand out more. And your date will thank you.

Stay tuned for Part 2 later this week!

Thanks for reading.

Stylishly Yours,

Brian
