October is Non-GMO month, a month dedicated to raising awareness about what GMO’s are and the risk they pose to our health. My friends at Natural Vitality (the brilliant creators of our favorite powdered magnesium supplement, CALM) created a free eBook on the inspiring world of GMO-free living. Where they’ve included some GMO basics to simplify what can be a confusing and overwhelming topic. Plus, you’ll find lots of tips and expert advice for living GMO-light.
As a subscriber to their newsletter, I received their newest book Calmfully Non-GMO when it launched a couple of days ago. Truth be told, I don’t know too much about GMO’s and living GMO-free living and found their 33-page guide pretty darn cool.
And I was pretty excited when I read through the pages that I wanted to share this (free) guide with you and highlight one of my favorite recipes from the eBook.
I knew that GMO’s were bad news, but was blown away to learn that America is an odd one out on the issue of GMO safety. In more than sixty countries around the world, including Australia, Japan and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production and sale of GMOs, according to the Non-GMO Project.
What I love about the Non-GMO eBook is that it provides readers with step-by-step instruction on living GMO-light – a balance of being conscious to the GMO issue out there, but still living. With 2 easy ways to avoiding GMO’s, 4 steps to living GMO-light, and being inspired by leaders in the GMO-free community.
And there are recipes!
I recreated the Chai-Infused Pumpkin Pie Smoothie (page 28), and adjusted a couple of things here and there for the keto-inclined.Get the recipe by downloading your free copy of the Calmfully Non-GMO eBook from Natural Vitality.
If you’re following a keto, high-fat, Fat Fueled eating style…
- The original recipe in the book is great for after a workout. Add protein powder such as grass-fed collagen and use brewed chai tea or the dairy-free milk outlined in the recipe. For more on carbing up and using timed carbohydrates after workouts, get on the list for my new book, Fat Fueled.
- The original recipe can be altered slightly (as I did) to make it more keto-friendly for anytime of day. Replace the bananas with ½ fresh or frozen avocado and switch the dairy-free milk for full-fat coconut milk to take the healthy fats to a whole new level. You could even add some coconut oil or MCT oil, too!
I used a heirloom pumpkin from our local health food store, but any (non-GMO) pumpkin puree would do the trick for this recipe.
If; like me, you are curious about what switching to living GMO-light may look like for you, Calmfully Non-GMO eBook may be a great starting off point for you as it has been for me. While much of what I eat is naturally free from GMO’s without me even knowing it, it was cool to see yet another reason why eating whole foods is so darn important for my health beyond the classic nutrition conversation.
