Taking the family away on holiday soon? Get ready to make packing part of the fun, with a new generation of fun-sized travel bags designed with younger travellers in mind. We checked out some of the most eye-catching and practical children’s luggage items from Samsonite, Trunki and more.

The best children’s luggage pieces for family holidays

Wheelie good fun…

Samsonite is doing a great job of combining tough, hard-wearing luggage technology with cute and colourful designs that kids will love. The Sammies roller case range, which includes bags in the shape of cars, animals, fruit and cartoon characters, takes all the practical aspects of Samsonite cases that adults love – easy handling, innovative design and robust architecture – and packages them in a friendly new format that’s perfect for children.

The Sammies upright trolley bag range, which includes the bus bag and pear bag pictured above (both £75), offers plenty of space for children’s holiday wardrobes, with room to spare for cuddly travelling companions and other essentials. Each has a hard-wearing, wipe-clean exterior, and comes with a two year warranty. Elsewhere in the range, there are some wonderful animal shaped rucksacks, including cute ladybird and elephant backpacks that would make ideal kids’ hand-luggage or sightseeing bags.

We’re giving away three Samsonite Sammies kids’ suitcases during March 2014 in our monthly competition – try your luck now!

Take a trip with Trunki

Trunki is another brand doing amazing things with children’s luggage at the moment. Their bold and attractive suitcases have a clever innovation that kids are sure to love: they’re designed to be ridden, as well as carried! Their popular range of ‘ride on’ bags includes cases made to look like tigers, fire engines (above), bumble-bees and even a Tyrannosaurus Rex – and they’re priced at just £39.99 a piece.

These bags are not only fantastic playthings: they’re made from the same durable, lightweight plastics used to make adult travel bags, and are roomy and organised inside, with elastic straps for secure fastening. A range of smart and practical saddle bags is also available for day-to-day travel on holiday or at home is also available, and there are activity packs specially designed to fit inside a Trunki bag, ideal for keeping children occupied on long journeys.

Trolley Dolly

Skip Hop produces some adorable products that are just as likely to be coveted by parents as by their children, and many of the brand’s most stylish pieces are to be found in the kids’ luggage department. This cute retro-style owl bag is one of our favourites, with its polkadot pocket and patchwork-style eyes. But as well as looking great, this is a roomy and practical bag too, with handy mesh side pockets and an extra large interior.

Backpack buddies

For those planning a shorter trip or hoping to travel light, there are some great hard-shelled backpacks available for children through Skyflite’s kids’ range (you’ll also find some fun roller cases in this collection). We particularly like this fun froggy bag, featuring a cute character who looks like he’s already getting into the holiday spirit!

The trolley and backpack equivalent are suitable for air travel with all international carriers, and the shiny plastic exterior makes them both attractive and weatherproof. Look out for the penguin, polar bear and tiger cub editions, all available to buy from £18.99.

Now head to our competition page for a chance to win some fab Samsonite children’s suitcases!
