Why New York Fashion Week Matters | Vice | United States

New York Fashion Week: Will menswear outshine womenswear? It definitely did at the Grammys. – The Washington Post

Donna Karan, another New York fashion giant, hasn’t been relevant in years. Though the designer continues to serve her loyal customer base, the brand hasn’t had a directional statement in at least a decade. However, its younger sister, DKNY, perhaps the progenitor of the contemporary market, has managed to steal back some of its former glory after years of stagnancy. Collaborating with Opening Ceremony on archival reissues and tapping New York’s nightlife personalities for runway shows and ad campaigns has helped the brand reconnect with its urban roots and reassert itself among competitors.

Vegan fashion grows more fashionable as textile technology improves – LA Times

Blige circa mid-90s, when ghetto fabulousness was making waves in the fashion industry and everyone from Gucci to Chanel took a bite out of the trend. Her middle son, Jamal the creative, gay one whose sexuality serves the plot asks the question that begs to be asked: What gives with the clothes? It allows Cookie to explain not just the current ensemble, but her entire sense of aesthetics and maybe a bit about her state of mind: She was wearing what she wore into prison. But even when she walks into the light, and eventually into a department store, she never gives up her allegiance to a look that firmly connects her to her past and to herself. She does not evoke Hollywood glamour, Upper East Side wealth, or an indeterminate international savoir faire. Her style evokes the brash, attention-grabbing honesty that has its roots among the striving class. Her clothes say money; she wears limo heels; and she has a smart mouth to equal a quick brain.

The answer is: probably if the clothes are worth the effort. The CFDA has the stature to organize this event and has a proven history in corralling its members, which can be akin to herding cats. It has a bold face presenting sponsor in Amazon, which is working steadily to increase its already substantial footprint in the fashion realm. Its secondary sponsor is Shinola, the Detroit-based manufacturer of watches, bikes and leather goods that mines American heritage in its branding.

REUTERS/PAUL HACKETT British designer Alexander McQueen committed suicide five years ago, but is now said to have wanted to take his own life as early as the 90s. A new report claimed that his mothers passing was taken as an indication that he could already end his life. Alexander McQueens fans were devastated when the British designer took his own life back in 2010. According to the media, the fashion designers suicide was associated to the grief he felt losing his mother to cancer a few days earlier. However, Page Six reports that a new book, Gods and Kings: the Rise and Fall of Alexander Queen and John Galliano, detailed that the designers decision was not made overnight and certainly not because he could not handle his grief. Instead, It was a decision he wanted to make ever since the mid 1990s.

New Detail Released On British Fashion Designer Alexander Queen’s Suicide

“We have all had the mind-set that it looks fake and shiny and doesn’t feel good,” said Ana Hartl, managing director of creative at Free People, part of Urban Outfitters Inc. “I remember the days of ’90s plasticky polyurethane pleathers.” A few years back, Hartl said, she began noticing that some high-quality faux fabrics were virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. Free People has more than doubled its vegan offerings since debuting its first collection in 2011. In the last two years it has launched vegan shoes and handbags. Vegan sales have surpassed leather in some categories, including jackets and vests.
