Master Bedroom Design – One Room Challenge Week 1

The day has arrived! We're kicking off the One Room Challenge. *drumroll* And I'm tackling my Master Bedroom!!

To catch you up, last week I shared on Instagram that I'm taking part in the Official One Room Challenge (ORC). What is the ORC? It's a challenge to redesign a space in six weeks. There are a group of designers and bloggers who participate in the official challenge, which occurs in the spring and fall. Anyone is welcome to join in on the fun as an ORC participant.

Even though this is the first post of the challenge, today marks the official end of the first week. I will be back here every Wednesday until the final reveal on May 8.

Master Bedroom Design - One Room Challenge Week 1

I thought I'd use this post to share before images of the space and walk you through my master bedroom design plan.

If you are new to Inspired By Charm, I purchased my home (which I lovingly call Bayberry House in honor of my grandparents) last June. I've been busy with updates since then, but other than refinishing the hardwood floor, I haven't given much attention to my bedroom.

The furniture currently in the room is from the bedroom of my former apartment. Many people would agree that it's more functional than stylish.

That means I'm pretty much starting from scratch. And as I thought about what I wanted for this space, I came up with a list of goals to keep me on track.

Master Bedroom Design Goals:

- Add interest to the room with molding and trim.
- Repaint the walls and woodwork.
- Update the lighting.
- Update and add textiles, including curtains, bedding, and a rug.
- Source an upholstered bed, dressers, and side tables.
- Give the master bath a mini update.
- Introduce artwork and personal elements.

With these goals decided, I looked for inspiration. This was easy. I've had this vintage paint-by-number for over a year now. As soon as I decided to tackle this space, I knew it would serve as inspiration.

Not only do I like the colors of this painting, but I love its vibe of peace and calm. That's exactly what I need in my bedroom. From there, I referenced my general design vision for my home: Modern Country Colonial and came up with this preliminary plan. I also have a Pinterest board dedicated to my master bedroom design. At any rate, I couldn't be more excited about the overall vision. It's going to be the retreat I need at the end of a long workday.

Some finishing details are still in up in the air, so things may change slightly. However, at this time, here's my plan:

Master Bedroom Design Plan:

-I'm kicking things off with a faux board and batten treatment that I'll paint Sherwin-Willams Anew Gray. (Upper wall color is still TBD.)

-I've ordered this beautiful bed from Crate & Barrel. I've been eyeing it for over a year.

-This rug from Loloi will tie in all the colors perfectly. (It should be arriving any day!)

-I'm sourcing custom bedding from Roostery (a division of Spoonflower).

-My goal is to go vintage for the dresser and bedside tables, but I do have this dresser sourced as back-up.

-Though I'm still deciding on the color, drapes from Barn & Willow will add softness.

-I also plan to update the bathroom door by installing a barn door system from Emtek. Because my bathroom is small, having the door swing in is problematic. I think a barn door system will be an excellent solution.

- If time allows, I'm also going to give my small master bath a mini update. (This would entail new paint and a few decorative accessories.)

That's it for now, but as you can imagine there are lots of details to come! I hope you are as excited as I am about this challenge and about my plan for my master bedroom. I'm looking forward to walking you through the space as it evolves into something totally new.

While all of this is a fun endeavor for me, I can hardly wait to complete the project. My world has been a bit unsettled for the past couple of years, so finishing this bedroom (and my kitchen) will bring me a sense of comfort. I anticipate that finally settling into a space of my own that reflects my vision will be pure bliss.
