Vintage-Inspired Christmas Gift Tags

I may be a bit late in getting these out (I'm sure some of you already have your gifts wrapped.), but I couldn't let this year end without sharing free and festive tags for your Christmas gifts.

As you may know, over the past couple of years, my holiday decorating has included a nod to Christmases past. (That reminds me, I need to put together a post about vintage Christmas decor ideas.) While I was antiquing and thrifting this past summer, I came across lots of old Christmas cards and postcards. Looking at the designs stirred up that special feeling that only Christmas can bring.

I kept those vintage designs in the back of my mind, knowing that I wanted to do something special during the holidays this year. I even purchased a couple of those cards for inspiration.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I found some old Christmas gift tags. My first thought: Wouldn't it'd be fun to combine the two ideas and make Vintage-Inspired Christmas Gift Tags? I'm overjoyed with how the tags turned out. Let me show you.

These Christmas gift tags are available as a free printable to you. (Details are below.) There are 16 unique gift tag designs on two sheets. I've also included an optional backside that has a place to fill in "to and from".

All of the designs are actual vintage Christmas graphics. I sourced them from rawpixel and The Graphics Fairy. If you're interested in a particular design, you can search for it there.

To use these Christmas gift tags, just download the free printable, save it to your computer, and print out the tags. If you're using the "to and from" on the backside, you will need to flip over the paper or use the double-sided option (if available) on your printer to print the back. I do recommend using card stock paper. I will link the kind I like HERE.

Once the tags are printed, cut them out. I use a paper cutter like this one to get nice straight lines. However, scissors will work. You also will need a hole punch to make the hole at the end.

At this point, the gift tags are ready to go. If you prefer a little sparkle, you can put glitter around the edge of the tags. That's what I did.

Adding glitter is easy and seems to enhance the vintage look. I used tacky glue and two colors of German glass glitter: gold and silver. German glass glitter is probably my favorite type of glitter. It looks so sparkly and rich.

To put on the glitter, I first put a line of tacky glue on a piece of card stock paper. I very lightly dipped each edge of the tag into the glue and then into the glitter. I wanted a fairly thin line of glitter for a more delicate look, but you can go as heavy as you like.

Once all the edges have glue on them, dip them in the glitter. Set the tag aside to dry.

Because there is quite a variety in the gift tags, I found that some look better with silver glitter and others look better with gold. However, if you only want to buy one type of German glass glitter, (It is a bit pricey.) that would still work. I've linked my favorite here.

Once the glitter was dry, I ran a piece of twine through the hole in each tag. This will allow me to tie the tags onto my packages. I especially like this twine from The Container Store. It comes in a range of colors: pink, charcoal, taupe, and sage. They had sold some with a silver strand, but I noticed that it no longer seems to be available. You can also find twine like this at Target, HomeGoods, and other stores.

And with that, my Vintage-Inspired Christmas Gift Tags were complete! I think they turned out beautifully. They just might be among the favorite gift tags I've ever made.
