meet alfie

Why hello there! I’m excited to share some very fun news and introduce you to the newest member of our family: Alfie! :)

If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen my obsession begin as I’ve fallen hard for this sweet little guy. He is the reason why it’s been a little quiet around here as I transition to being a puppy mama. In some ways it feels like having a baby (I have such a newfound respect for you mothers!) and it’s so much fun to see him grow and discover his surroundings. We are so happy to call him ours!

I’d love to tell you more about his adoption story, if you’re interested…

As I’ve mentioned before, we’ve wanted a dog since we got married…and once we bought a house with a yard we could hardly wait. For the past 6 months I’ve probably been on Petfinder or the Humane Society website almost every day…and I wish that was an exaggeration. Nick and I both grew up with dogs and couldn’t wait to have our own together. We decided to wait until the dreadful winter was over (as painful as it was, I’m so glad we did), and now the weather couldn’t be more perfect for a puppy!

We adopted him from a local non-profit and rescue organization. There are so many puppies and dogs that need homes out there I think it is so important (and rewarding) to rescue. While searching, I saw his photo online and fell in love. We went through the process of filling out an application, completing a home visit, and then after a few weeks, we got to visit his litter on a farm where they were being fostered.

All of the puppies in his litter looked so different – some had spots and were really fluffy, others were black, and he was the only one with his coloring. Surprisingly, they think there may have been a few fathers. We went in with an open mind and wanted to find the best puppy and personality for us. It had been so long since I’d played with a puppy and I just melted. They were all so happy to see us and were jumping and licking enthusiastically; by the time we were done we were both dirty, happy, and without shoelaces.

It wasn’t hard to fall for Alfie. When the other dogs were jumping around and being wild, he decided to go lie down. But when we called him, he sweetly approached us and looked us right in the eyes. I’m a total sap, but it was love at first lick. We met his mom, a sweet apricot golden retriever. She was rescued while pregnant in Alabama (!) and the puppies were born and kept in Wisconsin. We don’t know his breed for sure, but we know golden retriever from meeting his mother, and they also think catahoula leopard dog. We also wonder if he has a bit of corgi in him due to his face and coloring (minus the short legs and pointy ears). This photo of a corgi sure looks a lot like him!

We met him on a Tuesday night and then we picked him up when he was nine weeks old on Saturday, May 17th. He was nervous and a little traumatized from two car rides, but thankfully had no accidents. We got home and he immediately fell asleep in our yard (the photos above). When he woke up we brought him inside and he was terrified of our wood floors. The first night he slept in his bed (still scared of the floors) and didn’t make a peep. For the first week, I set an alarm to let him out in the middle of the night.

It’s been almost three weeks now and it’s so fun to see his transformation. He went from being a shy and fearful little pup to a playful and confident little guy that loves to snuggle on the couch and be near us. I think we really lucked out in the puppy department because he’s only had a handful of accidents. He gets up extremely early, but he does sleep through the night!

We are doing our best to wear him out. He’s slowly getting the hang of walks and fortunately our neighborhood has so many dogs he is becoming really well socialized with other dogs, people, and kids.

Alfie is such a sweetie and has already brought us so much joy (it didn’t take long). I will say I’m completely exhausted but with time I’m starting to adjust to his schedule and it’s 100% worth it.

I know I’m biased, but isn’t he the cutest? I’m now a proud dog mama and while I’ll try not to go too crazy, there will likely be lots more photos of Alfie to come. :)

Hope you’re having a great start to summer! Can you believe it’s finally here?!
