Organizing Our Garage AND $100 Ace Gift Card Giveaway!

Last year I was asked to be part of the first ever Ace Hardware Blogger Panel, and I did a series of paint related posts on my paint color blog, Involving Color. It was such a great experience, and I had the chance to meet their team in Chicago along with the rest of the Blogger Panel. Ace Hardware is a great company that I support, and my neighborhood Ace store has such friendly and helpful staff. They asked me back to participate on the panel again this year, and I couldn’t be more thrilled.

This year in my partnership with Ace, I’ll be doing a mix of home maintenance projects here on Involving Home and paint projects on Involving Color. I’m really excited about what we have in store for the next year. It should be fun!

To kick off the program, Ace asked me to find something unexpected in the store. Each store has a different selection because they are individually owned, so it was fun to see the products my local store carried. When I was browsing around, I was trying to keep my 2014 goals in mind, particularly my messy garage.

We started out here a few weeks ago.

Then we installed some of our old kitchen cabinets and an inexpensive laminate counter to create a workbench and storage area.

But it was still missing something.

When I was at my local Ace walking around, I turned a corner and saw these pegboards, I knew I found what I needed. It would be perfect for organizing our tools and other odds and ends.

They also had a really good selection of pegboard accessories which really surprised me. I had no idea there were so many types. I may have spent about 30 minutes staring at these, imagining all of the organizational possibilities. I finally decided on a pack of 32 assorted peg hooks and another pack of 47 assorted peg hooks.

When I got home I went straight to work. The pegboard was easy to cut using a circular saw. I used a jig saw to make the outlet cutouts.

The pegboard was an unfinished composite, so I gave it a quick hit of paint using Ace Light Gray spray paint. This is a really nice gray, BTW. I’m already thinking about where else I can use it.

I had so much fun with organizing everything, and it was like a jigsaw puzzle to figure out where to put things. I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to finally say all of my tools have a home. Previously they were piled in tool boxes and bins, and basically a giant mess.

Much better.

One of my favorite parts is the shelf I put right by the outlet to store my cordless drill charger and drill bits.

No more hunting for tape measures, safety goggles, and ear protection.

And while I was at my local store, I also spotted this Rubbermaid Tool Tower. I didn’t know these even existed.

In planning for our garage organization, I wasn’t sure how to tackle our pile o’ shovels, brooms, rakes, and other gangly lawn and garden tools. You see, we had been propping up all of these things against a corner in the garage, and this just wasn’t cutting it. It was messy, difficult to find what we needed, and a pain to deal with since they were always toppling on each other.

This tool tower organizes all of that.

It was about the easiest thing I have ever put together. It took all of about 5 minutes. The legs, top, and bottom just lock together, and then there is a metal anchor that comes with it to keep it from tipping over that I screwed into the stud. I wasn’t sure how sturdy it would be, but it’s quite sturdy!

I’m sure the things on the pegboard will be constantly rotating, because knowing me, the next time I’m looking for something fun to do I’ll go out and reorganize my tools. Who’s with me?
