Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty at the V&A

Last weekend I was in London for Lauren’s birthday. We did many lovely things – dinner and champagne at Bob Bob Ricard, hanging in a gorgeous Balham apartment and brunch at The Riding House Café – but my favourite bit was the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibition at the V&A.

We rocked up at the V&A on Saturday around 12pm, with hopeful smiles, impeccable manners but no tickets. We were told to join the queue at the desk and soon we were at the front, ordering 4 tickets for the exhibition (which was completely sold out online). I was really surprised how easy it was to get tickets – definitely worth noting if the day you want to visit is sold out on the website.

We waited patiently for our time slot, flicking through the guide and style-spotting the people around us. At 12.45pm we were ushered in and began making our way around the dark space.

Savage Beauty is Europe’s first and largest retrospective of McQueen’s work, spanning his 1992 MA graduate collection to his final S/S 2010 Plato’s Atlantis collection. As well as the visual delight of all that beautiful fashion, it’s also incredibly moving and provides a real insight into McQueen’s personality. His quotes, inspirations and passions are displayed so honestly, giving the exhibition a real rawness. At some points, the scale of his skill was overwhelming and when we stumbled out into the gift shop after an hour and a half I felt quite emotional, but totally uplifted and inspired by such an incredible talent.

I’m not going to give away the details of the exhibition and as (rightly so) no photos are allowed, I don’t have images to share. All you really need to know is that it’s very special indeed, and anyone with even a passing interest in fashion should go immediately.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty is at the V&A until 2nd August. Tickets are £16 from the V&A or £17.50 online. Go buy one now!
