Ant-Man - Film Review

I love Marvel movies.

They're so fun and entertaining, and very rarely do they disappoint. However, when I first heard of the concept for the new Marvel movie, Ant-Man, I thought it would fall short. I love comics, but I've never gotten into the Marvel comics (I'm more of an Archie girl), so I usually go into the movies without any prior knowledge of the stories/heroes.

But, I did start to warm up to the idea of the movie once I began to see trailers etc. And when I found out that Paul Rudd was cast to be the lead, I was *really* excited. I've seen Rudd in Clueless (Josh) and in Friends (Mike) and loved him in both.

However, his role as Scott Lang (A.K.A. Ant-Man) was pretty different from his roles as Mike and Josh. He plays a (strictly non-violent) burglar fresh out of prison, trying to change his ways for the sake of his daughter Cassie. But because of his talents, Hank Pym (the original Ant-Man - played by Michael Douglas) decides to recruit him to stop Darren Cross (Corey Stoll), Pym's old assistant, from recreating the ant-man technology and using it as a weapon of war. This is of course to the frustration of Pym's daughter, Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), who believes Scott is too inexperienced and that she should be the one to go up against Cross.

What made the movie even better was the incorporation of similar humour as in Guardians of the Galaxy. It made it really light-hearted and entertaining, and there were some really hilarious parts and secondary characters (watch out for Luis, he always stole every scene he was in).

There were many allusions to the Avenger's movies, even with a small appearance by the Falcon. It's interesting to see how all of the movies will tie together in the future.

I've heard complaints about the villain in the movie, Darren Cross, and how he was as uninteresting as many other Marvel villains. I've never had much of a problem with the antagonists in the movies, but I don't completely disagree with the opinions about the villains. I have heard that a lot of Cross's backstory from the comics was excluded from the movie, and I think having a closer look into his life could have added to the film.

But there really wasn't anything major that I disliked about the movie. I ended up seeing it twice, and the second time was just as good as the first (which for me, is always a good sign - don't get me started on Rango. I saw that movie one too many times...).

It was by far my favourite Marvel movie, and even though I love Marvel, until now I definitely haven't been able to single one out over the others as the one I've enjoyed the most.

Here's the trailer if you haven't seen it yet:
