Life is a Jerk and So Are People Who Can’t Drive.

Yesterday my son went to the DMV to pay the transfer fees and registration for the car he was so graciously gifted from his grandmother. I had added him to my insurance a week earlier and when asked if he wanted liability or full coverage, he opted for liability because the car is old and you know, YOUNG PEOPLE.

Just hours after returning from the DMV he was in an accident. The car in front of him stopped suddenly and he hit them from behind. Of course, they’re saying it’s his fault. So, he’s screwed. There is most likely thousands of dollars of damage to his car. I know that this is his problem since he is an adult, but he is also my son and I feel horrible that we are not in a position to help him. (We are down to one car ourselves. One of the joys of Long Term Funemployment!)

This type of thing has always been the story of our life. Something good happens (he officially becomes the owner of his first car!) Something immediately terrible happens. (He wrecks that car and it won’t be covered by insurance.)

Because I never want to become a bitter person, I try to find the lesson in the bad things that happen. I stayed up all night last night trying to figure this one out. All I could come up with was “You should have insisted he get the full coverage, Dumbass!”

Accidents happen, life goes on. I just wish life would be a little bit kinder to us every once in a while.
