Nutribullet Magic Bullet

So I bit the bullet (arf!) and bought a Nutribullet last year. It’s the kitchen gadget that’s whipped up the health conscious into a frothy frenzy. It’s not a juicer but better described as a super-food extractor that breaks down your food to unleash the essential nutrition from within. To put it another way, it grinds nuts and frozen fruit in seconds.

A few things sold it to me:

  1. Its compact size
For my small kitchen my worktop is already overcrowded with other necessary appliances and gadgets. The size of a Nutribullet means it can sit neatly on the worktop without being offensively in the way. It takes up less room than a liquidiser or blender, which is essentially what Nutribullet is. I don’t care what the manufacturer says, it’s a blender albeit a super one. Because of its size it also means that when it’s there, it will always be used unlike a number of my other gadgets which have to be put away (my pasta maker has only seen the light of day once in about 24 months.)
  1. It’s multifunctional
The Nutribullet is not just for making smoothies and juices, it can be used for making soups, dips and sauces.
  2. It’s easy and quick to clean
Next to my juicer, the Nutribullet takes less than a minute to soap up and rinse. If you can’t sit comfortably until the washing is done, this won’t put you off consuming your Nutribullet cocktail.
  1. It blends everything!
It’s the most efficient way of ensuring you get your essential nutrients and vitamins without most of it being discarded. I have a Phillips juicer which is great but my word, does it make me weep when I have to throw away the fleshy waste from pulverising a basket of fruit through its blades for a glass of juice.

I like to use my Nutribullet in the mornings, taking it to work as I am terrible for skipping breakfast. The travel mug is extremely secure and leak-proof, and I find the fruity concoction stays fresh throughout the day if I don’t manage to gulp it down in one go.

I have yet to follow a recipe from the Nutribullet book or any blog for that matter. Instead I am winging it by putting together whatever I can find in my fridge (within reason). I haven’t the patience to source and plan recipes meticulously (this is rich coming from someone who follows cooking and baking recipes to the last gram). Seriously, the Nutribullet recipes involve too much faffing around and I’m not hardcore enough to source chia seeds or trek down to Whole Foods but I won’t stand in the way of anyone’s happiness of chucking in some super-food seeds or a spoonful of protein powder.

Since welcoming the Nutribullet into my life, it has proved to be a great way to consume fruit and vegetables I normally wouldn’t eat like bananas and yes, I’ve finally given into kale. More importantly I’ve had people comment on my appearance, telling me my eyes look brighter and my skin looks great.

Remember this post? I was on the Nutribullet for a week, desperate to fit into my dress and it paid off.

I’ve highlighted a few main points about the Nutribullet if you are thinking of investing in one.

Use frozen fruit
They last longer, contain more flavour and much are cheaper than fresh. We’re talking raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and sometimes mangoes and pineapples.

You can freeze some fruit and vegetables
Spinach and kale should be washed and allowed to dry naturally before dividing them into a little sandwich bags.

The concoction below is banana with supermarket frozen raspberries and frozen kale (from fresh) with a splash of water. It sounds gross but it was actually delicious and it perked me up when I’d had only 5 hours sleep.

Cleaning
The Nutribullet is quick and easy to clean but that’s only the jug and blade. I’d like to know how the manufacturer can explain how some juice residue leaks into the bottom part. This is a nuisance especially as bits get stuck under the plastic part as well as the rubber washers that sit inside. Thankfully the washers are removable and can be washed but a kitchen towel needs to be slid under the plastic wheel to clean any deposits under. The inner edge is virtually impossible to clean as you can see from the picture below. Annoying and not as perfect as Nutribullet makes itself out to be!

Spare parts
A fail here, Nutribullet. There is nothing in place for UK consumers to buy spare parts. I dropped my travel mug and the lid smashed. If I want to replace it I have to buy an entire jug kit for £20. Other small parts are just not available. Someone in my house threw away the rubber bits that I had left soaking in washing up detergent (which I managed to fish out of the waste bin and one out of the sink’s plug hole!). I’m not sure how crucial they are but I could only find replacements from an ebay seller in the States (at a cost of £7 just for shipping alone!)

Is it worth it?
Frankly mine is used every day, several times a day in fact so I am getting my money’s worth. It takes a few seconds to blend a drink together and there never are lumpy bits. There are no buttons too – just twist it on and it will start blitzing the hell out of whatever you put in it but there are cheaper alternatives on the market which others swear by and I have to say they do look good.

The difference with the Nutribullet is its powerful motor (600 watt with bullet cyclonic action that forces everything through the turbo extractor blades at 20,000 RPM, breaking down and pulverising stems, seeds and skins where some of the usually neglected essential nutrition lies). Compared to an average blender, it will mash EVERYTHING. If your budget allows you to then the Nutribullet is wonderful.

I bought my Nutribullet Magic Bullet from Robert Dyas for £99.99. If you order online, it’s free delivery. Do you have a Nutribullet or are you thinking about getting one? Do let me know what you think!
