bottoms up pants // pattern tour

I’m so excited to be sharing a new sewing pattern with you all today from Jess of If Only They Would Nap. She is a talented seamstress and fellow coffee addict — and also a cloth diapering family. With Jones, we are definitely more “middle of the road” in our cloth use, but we use it almost 100% when we are home.
Here are a few details about the Bottoms Up Pants pattern:
- They are designed to fit over a fluffy, cloth diaper bottom
- They are an easy sew — I did these a few evenings ago in under an hour…..it would have gone faster, but I was distracted by The Good Wife and a glass of wine.
- They include optional features: faux welt pockets, three different front pocket styles, cuffs
- They can be made as flat-front pants or full elastic waist
- Available in size newborn to 6T.
I knew I wanted to make these and share this pattern with you all, so I’m happy Jess asked me to take part. A few of my thoughts about the pattern:
- Jess has wonderful, step-by-step instructions. This project would be a great first garment to tackle!
- They run true to size — I made a 6month size for Jones (as he’s in 6-12 month clothing, mostly). I did make the 9month length and hemmed with the extra, so that I could let it out if needed. They are a little big on him now, as expected, but I know they will fit him soon!
- The space for the cloth is great! Jess did a great job making a pair of pants that would be cute over disposables as well. It’s roomy for cloth, but not absurd.
I’m really excited to make these in a sweatshirt jersey or fleece. I love more tapered ankles, so I’m going to use her pattern and taper the legs to a cuff. I’ll definitely share them when I make them!
