5 Things: Declutter Your Space.

I have truly become obsessed with decluttering lately; although I’ve long since accepted that I’ll never be a ‘minimal’ person, I do like everything in its place! Since I’ve been spending a lot of time reshuffling and reorganising, I thought I’d share some advice.

Have A Sort Out
The first step to any sort of reshuffle is to cut down on the amount of stuff you actually have. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be holding on to stuff from years ago. I have a rule that if I haven’t worn it or whatever in 6 months or so, it needs to find a new home. I usually start by setting up a bin bag for old junk and rubbish, a recycling pile for packaging etc. and a charity box and/or a ‘for friends’ pile for stuff that is too nice to throw away, but hasn’t been touched by me in months.
You have to be pretty ruthless during this stage, if you want a nice, organised life then you have to commit to parting with some of your old clutter. It’s the circle of liiiife.

Think About Storage
If your stuff is everywhere, you’re probably lacking in the storage department. I recommend you head to a storage department and get stocked up, I usually go to IKEA since they are the masters in home organisation. I bought two of the Alex drawers on castors a while back and it was one of the best decisions ever. If you don’t need anymore furniture, think about other ways you can store your belongings – storage boxes under beds, rejigging hallway cupboards so there’s more room, hanging shelves, making proper use of drawers…

Drawer Dividers
This could have been added to the above, but I think it deserves its own heading. Drawer dividers are what it’s all about, people! They keep everything organised, they look pretty and you can really make better use of the space.
I bought a whole load in bulk from MUJI recently and it’s been so much fun organising everything! I love the Vanity Cases, as well as the Storage Boxes – so handy and they usually slot in nicely to most drawers. Alternatively, follow my DIY on how to make your own here.

Chop and Change It
Sometimes I organise a whole drawer and realise it doesn’t work, or it would be better another way – it’s all trial and error, so play around with your area and see what works best. For makeup tables, acrylic storage is great for overspill and holding lipsticks, while the drawers are best for everyday items. For bedside tables, I recommend keeping your essentials close to hand, and leaving the rest in a bathroom or tucked away in a drawer.
It’s all about finding a place for everything; remember, if it’s something you need, make it easy to get hold of. Things like cleaning supplies and sports equipment need to be put away properly, but they also need to be reached easily when you need them, so keep this in mind. I find that this thinking is what keeps my house tidy.

Keep It Nice
So, you’ve spent an entire day putting everything in its place. It looks beautiful, you’re feeling like the ideal person… so let’s keep it that way. Put everything back in its place, keep things lookin’ pretty and don’t let your hoarder ways slip up.

Have you got any tips on organising and decluttering?
