Sewing Ralph Pink Patterns -Jumpsuit
I’m sewing one of Ralph Pink Patterns this week, you sewing enthusiasts have heard of them right? Of course you have if not pop on over and get acquainted it’s so graphically pleasing over there it drew me in quick-smart their clean website layout and edgy patterns, I’m a total sucker for that stuff, a girl like me needs that in her little sewing basket. I found myself sifting through the many patterns Ralph has on offer and decided on sewing this jumpsuit from the Catwalk Trend section and we all know how much I love a good jumpsuit. The fabric-floral linen, was thrifted, an ample 4 metres for $4! I know you wouldn’t read about it, I’ve been dead lucky lately with my thrifting I have this terrible fear that my luck will run out and I’ll then be subjected to the polyester mothball pile (which is sometimes not too bad) or the overpriced. Anyway this is the perfect pair-up for the this pattern review.
Who the hell do I think I am in these photo’s? I WAS going for a glam look!! hope that worked out and look! I’m wearing my bra I made from doilies…Ralph gave me access to this pattern which was available to print from A4 sheets of paper I’m not a fan of all that lining up and sticking-taping it takes up too much time I’d rather visit the printer with my USB and grab a coffee. I believe Ralph is currently in the process of making this happen, that makes me happy. In the interim I’m sure if you asked he’d send you the file at full-scale he’s a super friendly chap.
The instructions are fairly straight forward but there are some small components of this pattern missing for example, I needed to lengthen the midsection so the jumpsuit wasn’t riding up my front making me look like a 70′s disco diva with an angry camel-toe; this instruction is not part of the pattern I’m not too sure how fussy you are with these things but I always use my sewing-intuition to work these things out, something I do for most patterns I sew. I feel it’s a great way to learn about construction because you’re using your brain and not being guided every step of the way, but that’s just me. There’s no mention of fabric yardage and the mention of a notion pops up at the end of the instructions which we all agree we need this info when we are ordering fabric online or out and about shopping. I mentioned this to Ralph and he’s working diligently perfecting his product so we can sew his patterns and parade them like super sewing models *winks* on our blogs and beyond.
Because of the nature of the fabric I passed on interfacing the crotch facing and neck band, the asymmetrical crotch is the absolute high-lite along with the neckline seriously, LOVE that business, I felt that interfacing them would have hindered the way the fabric sat which is weird to say I know because the stuff holds form, if I did interface it would have been the lightest of lightest fusible so I didn’t bother I really wanted this jumpsuit to look casual-chic—if there is such a term. You get that by looking at the line-art, the slightly dropped crotch and what not. I doubled the fabric on the back yoke piece for extra strength and instead of facing the armholes as suggested I chose to make my own bias binding and trimmed them in that manner. I added carriers for the belt and eliminated the button on the crotch not really needing it because I added more length in the mid-section yadda yadda. I serged the whole suit the pattern calls for opened pressed seams so whatever floats your sewing boat my friend. I love that you step in pull your arms through and you’re ready to go. I’m eager to try some more of Ralph Pink Patterns, he has great fashion sense something I find lacks in some of the other indie pattern companies, they’re either too cutesy/girly or vintage inspired which are not for me. With some minor tweaking here and there I can see Ralph Pink Patterns becoming a major online sewing contender especially with their wide variety of edgy designs, I’m excited. I’m interested in trying out a bra-lette pattern and the corsets look divine. Have a look around over there you may find a silhouette you fancy, update your sewing box and perhaps your wardrobe.
