X Marks the Spot.

Sometimes I bathe in black, here are some other bathing posts, Black with a twirling Red Wedge, Black Black Black and this Pattern Magic dress. At one stage it was all I wore; and, the other day I read somewhere that Rick Owens wears the same thing everyday I couldn’t think of anything worse. This weeks make is a mash-up of a couple of ideas which I’d like to elaborate on so you get where I’m coming from.

Sometimes, I’ll stare longingly at Barbara Gongini’s clothes and fantasize about wearing some of it, but then I snap back into reality, there’s no way I’d ever be able to afford such a luxury…

…I can however purchase some black woven linen and at least have a go at pretending. So, I pull out my much-loved Bjork VHS video-Vessel and stare without blinking as Bjork skips about ever-so cutsey-like swinging those extra long sleeves around in windmill rotations, OMG! I have loved that top since 1994, I still have my first original make of it (Front & Back) which was made in white cheesecloth with sparkling stars stitched sporadically across the front which have now sadly faded and need replacing, she’s in true vintage shape now. I’ve remade her in black here; so over time the linen will wear down and the top will look like it’s well and truly ready for the bin and that’s when you know she’s at her peek, a bit like a yummy block of vintage cheese from the delicatessen.

Watch

Vessel on YouTube the top in question and in action starts from 3:51 it’s just So. Good. Fangirling since The Sugar Cubes.

You’ve probably gathered by now how much I like to play with proportion I think it makes your outfit look so much more interesting to look at. Big hat, long arms big feet, monstrous bag, I seriously love that the seams are not finished properly and the linen creases perfectly . It’s all very organic really.

The skirt is the left over linen wrapped and pinned with a kilt pin. The ageing process of the fabric excites me no end.

To complement my ‘bathing in black look’ ha! my bag came about after pulling out my vinyl copy of The XX, I love the simplicity of the X on the black. The small things right? The bag is made from hessian, I managed to picked up some hessian trim from the flea market for $2.

My hat is also black hessian which is loosely based on Boy Georges hat made by Judy Blame in this picture, and it is surprisingly very comfortable and keeps its shape really well, who knew? go hessian. If you want one let me know.

I’ve put this top through the wash a couple of times to help speed up the ageing process, if I can find some black sparkly stars I’ll sew them on the front too it HAS to be just like Bjork’s. OBSESSED? just a little.

Complete with hook ‘n’ eye closure.

Hessian hats are go!! I need a red one now, fire fighter! a blue one, and a yellow one for a rainy day?

X Marks the spot. The bigger the bag the more crap I can carry, I made a small pocket for my iphone, there’s nothing worse than digging for your life-line.

And that’s pretty much how my brain works when I plan to sew something.

Music, fashion and art are interchangeable.

Happy days.
