The One Thing Missing From Your Weightloss Plan

In the world of wellness books, Jorge Cruise is not a new face. The best-selling fitness author and trainer has more than 20 tomes under his belt. The latest is Stubborn Fat Gone ($25, Hay House), out today. What's different this time? A new focus that has nothing to do with how you're exercising or eating.

Find out the secret to what you're missing from your diet after the JUMP!

According to Cruise, if your mind is not in the right place, your body will never get there, either. This is why his latest title pushes daily affirmations, or positive sayings that you tell yourself, as part of a healthy routine. "The hormone cortisol, which directly causes belly fat, is linked to stress," he explains. "So many of my clients have massive stress and that raises cortisol. When that cortisol level goes up, you can't get rid of that stubborn belly fat, so you need a low-sugar diet as a base, but the next step is your thoughts."

Cruise calls this mind-focused method outlined in Stubborn Fat Gone "Think Fit." In the book, he writes that optimistic thoughts help fight impulsivity, and suppress your appetite and cravings by decreasing cortisol levels and triggering the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that brings forth feelings of calmness and happiness. "Instead of turning to carbs to raise your serotonin, you can simply make daily affirmations part of your life," he writes.

The book makes weight loss easy by taking you through 12 weeks, day by day. You get recipes for meals and snacks as well as an exercise plan and stress-reducing affirmations. If the act of self-talk is still going over your head, a top de-stressing tip Cruise shared with us was actually a very practical one. "I tell people it's about centralizing your life," he says. "Keep everything in a two mile radius. If you're running around here and there—the gym, grocery, your apartment—you're just making life hard."
